College football fans seem to be split right down the middle when it comes to bowl games, with some viewing them as great entertainment, while others think that the majority are a waste of time. As bettors, we all just love the opportunity to get a few more wagers in before the season comes to an end for another year. It would appear that some players, particularly those heading off to the NFL draft, see the bowls as not quite as important as the money they are about to make as a pro. A few big-name players have already made it clear that they will be skipping their teams bowl game this year. A prime example is Christian McCaffrey of Stanford, who has already announced his intention to sit out the Sun Bowl versus the North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday. It’s a blow for his team, and also for the fans who wanted to see him play one more time in the college ranks. It may well end up being a blessing in disguise for us bettors.

Why bet on the Stanford Cardinal?

Stanford are coming into this game as a 3-point betting odds favorite, and you really have to wonder what that spread would have been had McCaffrey decided to suit up and play. As it is, they are going to have to try and find a way to win without his awesome ground game, which could easily have given the Cardinal a minimum of 100-yards of offense in this one. Take that away, and what are you left with? The Cardinal finished the season on a high, winning 5-straight games, and getting solid QB play from Keller Chryst. The young man was accurate, and avoided mistakes, throwing 9 TD passes to just 1 INT. He is going to have to deliver more of the same here.

Why bet on the North Carolina Tar Heels?

The Tar Heels were a very pleasant surprise this season, and their 8-4 record was more than anyone but the most rabid NC fan expected out of them. Much of the credit for their success needs to go to QB Mitch Trubisky, who completed an impressive 68.9% of his passes. He has raised his stock in a big way, and it would be a huge surprise to see him go pretty high in the NFL draft. It’s not all Trubisky, though, as North Carolina has a balanced attack that can hurt teams through the air and on the ground.

Stanford vs North Carolina Sun Bowl Free Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels

I had Stanford winning this one quite comfortably before McCaffrey decided to sit, and now I have totally flipped my decision. I believe it will be Trubisky who shines in the Sun Bowl as the North Carolina Tar Heels come up with the minor upset.Stanford Cardinal 28 North Carolina Tar Heels 33
