Just one bowl game on Monday and it’s from South Carolina as Old Dominion of Conference USA takes on Tulsa of The American Athletic Conference in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. The Golden Hurricane are solid favorites on the NCAAF odds.

Series History

This is just the second year of the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Last year’s inaugural game was won by Appalachian State, a 56-28 winner over North Texas. It’s the first-ever meeting Old Dominion. The Myrtle Beach Bowl is just the second bowl game in the short history of the Monarchs’ FBS program.

Why Bet on Old Dominion?

Old Dominion (6-6) was 1-6 at one point but won its final five games, closing the season with a 56-34 victory over Charlotte to get bowl eligible for the first time in five seasons. The 56 points was the most ODU has scored in a Conference USA game since joining the league in 2014. Ali Jennings III, who transferred to ODU from West Virginia, hauled in nine passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns.

It was the 10th time in school history a player has caught three touchdowns in a game. The most recent was Jonathan Duhart in ODU’s 49-35 victory over Virginia Tech. The 252 receiving yards were the second most in a game in ODU history. Nick Mayers’ had 271 receiving yards in 2012 against New Hampshire

Quarterback Hayden Wolff completed 17 of 26 passes for three touchdowns and 328 yards. Blake Watson rushed 18 times for 106 times and two touchdowns and became only the second ODU player ever to rush for more than 1,000 yards.

Sophomore tight end Zack Kuntz had five receptions in the season finale win over Charlotte. He ranks second among FBS tight ends in receptions (71), eighth in receiving yards (674) and tied for 12th in touchdowns (5). A transfer from Penn State, Kuntz has been ODU’s leading receiver in 9-of-12 games so far this season. He has five games with eight or more catches.

ODU had has not gone to a bowl since defeating Eastern Michigan in the 2016 Bahamas Bowl. ODU was 1-11 in 2019 and because of the pandemic, was one of three FBS schools not to play in 2020. ODU was picked to finish last in the league and rated 129th out of 130 FBS teams entering this season.

ODU and North Texas both started this season 1-6. They join the 2016 Miami (Ohio) team that started 0-6, as the only teams since 1936 (AP Poll era) to win six games after starting a season 1-6 or worse.  ODU head coach Ricky Rahne will participate in his first game as head coach, but his 11th straight as a coach. Rahne’s streak started in 2010 at Kansas State. He is 6-4 in those games.

Why Bet on Tulsa?

Tulsa (6-6) got bowl eligible with a 34-31 upset at SMU in its finale. Trailing 17-0, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane had its fourth comeback win of the season and 20th in the Philip Montgomery era. After gaining just 14 yards on 13 plays in the first quarter, the Hurricane finished out the rest of the contest with 360 yards on 56 plays. Tulsa finished with 374 total yards, including 244 through the air and 130 rushing yards. Davis Brin completed 18-of-33 passes for 244 yards and one TD for the Hurricane, while Josh Johnson had his fifth 100+ receiving game with 117 yards on six receptions.

The Myrtle Beach Bowl appearance is the 23rd bowl game in school history for Tulsa and is the 12th bowl appearance in the last 19 years for the Hurricane. Montgomery takes his fourth team into a bowl game in his seven seasons. Montgomery’s team defeated Central Michigan 55-10 in the 2016 Miami Beach Bowl and fell to Virginia Tech 55-52 in the 2015 Independence Bowl and 28-26 to Mississippi State in the 2020 Armed Forces Bowl. The Hurricane have 10-12 bowl record and has won 5 of their last 8 bowl contests.

Running back Shamari Brooks, who missed the 2020 season with an ACL injury, became just the fifth player in school history to surpass 3,000 career rushing yards. Brooks ranks third on the school’s all-time rushing chart with 3,622 yards on 767 career attempts in 44 career games. His 767 carries are a school record.

Brooks needs 29 more yards to tie Tarrion Adams (3,651, 2005-08) for second place on the career list. Brooks also needs 78 yards to reach 1,000 yards on the season, which would give him two 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Brooks has a total of 30 touchdowns – 29 rushing and one receiving – to rank 9th on the school’s all-time TD chart.

Defensive coordinator Joseph Gillespie left to join Sonny Dykes’ staff at TCU. The Golden Hurricane’s strength this year has been the defense. In the final three regular season games, Tulsa’s defense has held its opponents to just a 17.8-percent third down conversion rate. Tulsa’s defense held its last three opponents to 14 three-and-outs on 38 possessions.
