Last Meeting
Utah lost at home to Stanford 23-20 last year. Bryce Love ran for 152 yards and a touchdown. On his 18th touch, the 5-foot-10, 196-pound speedster made two defenders miss in the hole and ran away for a 68-yarder that put the Cardinal up 23-13 with 12:02 remaining. Utah drove stormed down the field on the ensuing possession with Troy Williams hitting Darren Carrington for big gains, but an interception essentially ended the game. Williams threw another interception to Justin Reid with 5:52 remaining. Williams completed 20 of 39 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown.
Utah had won three straight games against the Cardinal before Stanford evened the overall series at 4-4 in 2017. It was Utah’s first loss to the Cardinal as a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Utah is 3-0 in Stanford Stadium. Utah’s 27-21 win over No. 5 Stanford in 2013 in Salt Lake City is the only home win by either team in the series.

The Utes lost their second straight Sunday, 28-24 at Washington State. The Cougars shredded the nation’s No. 1 defense for 445 total yards. Utah (2-2, 0-2) was coming off a bye week. The Utes defense came in allowing just 12.3 points and 204 yards per game. Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew completed 31 of 56 passes for three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for a touchdown. He threw the winning 89-yard TD pass with 4:14 left. Utah turned the ball over on downs with 50 seconds left when Tyler Huntley’s pass fell short on fourth-and-20.
Zack Moss rushed for 106 yards and Huntley ran for 88 yards. But the Utes managed only 118 yards through the air. Moss scored his team-leading fourth rushing touchdown of the season in the first quarter on a six-yard run. He has scored a rushing touchdown in six-straight games dating back to 2017.
After scoring three touchdowns and rushing for 154 yards in the first half, the Utes wound up adding just three points and 50 yards rushing following the break. Chase Hansen led the Utes on defense with seven tackles with Julian Blackmon adding six. Corrion Ballard also added three tackles, two pass breakups, and a key interception. The Utes have now lost their first two conference games for the first time since 2013.
Utah is 4-6 coming off a bye week in the Pac-12 era. Kyle Whittingham’s teams are 10-6 in his career following regular season byes. Washington State had zero rushing yards, the fewest yards that Utah has held a team to since holding Washington State to minus four yards in 2012.
Utah is 14-14 all-time in games televised by ESPN as this one will be.

Why Bet on Stanford?
The Cardinal were routed 38-17 at a very good Notre Dame team on Saturday. The Cardinal (4-1), beaten by the Irish (5-0) for the first time since 2014, were also seeking its third victory over a ranked opponent this season, having already defeated No. 17/12 USC and No. 20/19 Oregon.
Saturday’s contest also marked the first time in the series that both teams were carrying a top-10 AP ranking. Notre Dame and Stanford traded touchdowns before the Irish eventually seized control, scoring 39 seconds before halftime to take a 21-14 lead into the break.
Notre Dame’s defense made the difference in the game and carried it to the victory over the Cardinal. It held Stanford to just 229 total yards, 10 first downs and a 23 percent third-down conversion rate. The Fighting Irish also tallied five sacks and recorded an interception.
Stanford star RB Bryce Love finished with 73 yards on 17 carries despite leaving due to injury early in the fourth quarter. Love has been hampered by his ankle since originally injuring it last season against Oregon on Oct. 14. He missed a game earlier this season.
K.J. Costello completed 15 of 27 passes for 174 yards, including a 4-yard strike to JJ Arcega-Whiteside for Stanford’s second score of the game. It was the eighth touchdown catch of the year and 22nd career for Arcega-Whiteside, who now ranks fourth in school history in that category.
The hard truth for the Pac-12 is it will likely offer a one-loss conference champion, without a single quality nonconference victory, for the College Football Playoff committee to consider at the end of the regular season. And that is a best-case scenario. There’s only one marquee nonconference game left for the Pac-12 when two-loss USC hosts undefeated Notre Dame on Nov. 24.
