The 2020 Major League Baseball Season had scheduled to start on Thursday, March 26. That didn’t happen due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. Unlike the NHL and NBA, though, MLB has more wiggle room to get going. A plan developed last week that could lead to Major League Baseball becoming the first major sports league to resume play. MLB considering plan to play all games in Arizona

Arizona is one of the least coronavirus hit U.S. states. Although the Southwest state was late to the social distancing party, Arizona has few cases and few deaths compared to New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Louisiana.

Major League Baseball executives and players have discussed playing all games in Arizona. The Diamondbacks play at Chase Field. Spring training happens for multiple teams in Zona. There are baseball fields all over the place because it rarely rains and it’s almost never cold.

Perfect for Major League Baseball, right?

There’s also the fact that Arizona has more hotels than almost any State in the Union. But that’s also the rub.

MLB issues with playing every game in AZ

The main issue is one of logistics. The plan calls for players and MLB personnel to stay isolated in hotels and only go to the designated ballparks on game day. Sounds plausible. But is it? The logistics surrounding something like this is massive.

Exactly where would each team reside as MLB starts up the season? Baseball has stated that a 2 to 3 week spring training must also take place. So, if the Arizona only season started, it would happen in mid-May. But even then, the logistics must be worked out.

Will MLB playing games in just Arizona happen?

If it does, it will be a short-term fix. MLB and the MLBPA would agree to start the season in Arizona and then expand to non-coronavirus hotspots as the season goes on. That’s the best possible solution for everyone, including fans.

Fans have said they won’t return until there’s a vaccine, though. The poll says 72% won’t return to live sports events without a vaccine. That’s a dire number for all sports leagues, but it could change as the rate of infection lowers and other treatments become available.
