2021 Academy Award Oscar Nominations Announcement

  • When: Monday, March 15

Which movie will garner the most Oscar nominations?

It’s easy to say Golden Globe winner Nomadland, but the movie doesn’t qualify in enough categories.

Best Director? For sure. Chloe Zhao won the Globe. She should win the Oscar. Best Actress? Yep. Frances McDormand is fantastic. Best Adapted Screenplay? Absolutely. The movie is based on a book that Zhao brilliantly adapted to the screen.

Best Movie? Hand down, yes. Nomadland won the Globe for Best Picture. Right now, it’s the front runner to win the Oscar.

Count those nominations up and were to 4. Not that Nomadland’s creators care. If they go 4-for-4 on Oscar night, a possibility, they’ll be more than happy.

So if Nomadland doesn’t get the most nominations, which move will? Our money is on either the Trial of Chicago 7 or Mank. Both should get noms in many of the big categories as well as pick up nominations for things like costume design, sound editing, cinematography, film editing, etc.

Will the Best Actor nominations differ from the Golden Globes?

They may. Chadwick Boseman, the Globe winner for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Anthony Hopkins for The Father, are locks.

But Riz Ahmed for the Sound of Metal and Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian aren’t. Both could get shut out. We don’t believe they ditch Riz Ahmed.

The Academy won’t call Rahim’s name. Instead, they will call either Mads Mikkelsen for Another Round or Steven Yuen for Minari. Everyone likes Mads, who played the title character in Hannibal.

K-dramas are hot. Ask Netflix how hot they are and Parasite, a Korean film, won last year’s Oscar for Best Picture.

How will the Best Actress nominations differ from the Globes?

It’s difficult to see the Academy being different from the Globe actresses nominated in the drama category. Andra Day, who won for playing Billie Holiday in the United States vs. Billie Holiday, is a lock.

So is Viola Davis in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Frances McDormand in Nomadland. The two who could get shut out of Oscar night are Carey Mulligan in a Promising Young Woman and Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of A Woman.

Both are great, but Sophia Loren plays a Holocaust survivor who runs a day-care business and takes in a 12-year-old living on the streets in A Life Ahead. Come on, people. Will the Academy really ditch Sophia for Carey and Vanessa?

Best Picture Predictions

The Academy Awards can nominate up to ten movies for Best Picture. Check out the predicted list.
  • Nomadland
  • Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
  • The United States vs. Billie Holiday
  • Promising Young Woman
  • Trial of the Chicago 7
  • The Father
  • Judas &  The Black Messiah
  • Minari
  • News of the World
  • One Night in Miami

Mank is a contender for sure. But it didn’t blow audiences away like so many thought it would. Palm Springs, the Adam Sandberg comedy, Da 5 Bloods, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm are all deserving.

Unfortunately for those films, this is a crazy tough year. Nomadland, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, One Night in Miami, and every other movie on our predicted Best Picture Oscar list is good enough to win the golden eunuch.
