The fourth and final League of Legends World Championship quarterfinal fixture will feature a clash between the Korean Gen.G and the 2019 World Championship grand finalists G2 Esports on Sunday. The match promises to be one of the closest bouts of the playoffs and a true test for G2 Esports as they look to improve upon their performances from last year and bring the Summoner’s Cup back to Europe for the first time since 2011. Let’s get right into action so you can go ahead and bet on their League of Legends odds.

Gen.G Vs G2 Esports – League of Legends World Championship 2020

Despite G2 Esports’ international success in 2019, which saw them win the Mid-Season Invitational as well as reach the grand finals of the World Championship, the European juggernauts failed to impress with their performances this season. Even though G2 ended up winning both of the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) splits, they managed a rather underwhelming third-place finish in LEC Summer, which marked their worst regular-season placement since EU LCS 2018 Summer.

As for G2’s showings through the Worlds group stage, Luka “Perkz” Perković and co. had no real issues securing a ticket for the playoffs. However, it’s hard to be overly-optimistic about their overall performances – namely their losses to Suning.

Many people believe the current version of G2 is not nearly as strong as G2 in 2019. While there is some truth in that, we must also consider that G2 usually looks the best when no one expects them to.

G2’s biggest strength as a team is not only their very strong synergy, international experience and talented individual pieces but also their ability to quickly adapt to the circumstances. The latter is also the strongest argument to make why G2 can and likely will look much stronger in the playoffs compared to what they have shown in the group stage.

Individual performances of G2 players have been solid all-round, although we should see a bit more from their jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski, who looks like the weakest link in the team. Nevertheless, support Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle has been nothing short of exceptional this tournament, and the same goes for top laner Martin “Wunder” Nordahl Hansen.

We are still waiting for Rasmus “Caps” Borregaard Winther and Perkz to start showing their true potential, at which point, we can start talking about a possible title. Until then, however, G2 is nothing more than a team that MIGHT make a deep run.

Gen.G entered the 2020 LoL Worlds as a dark horse that could potentially impress. While it’s fair to say they’re still regarded as such, there is also no denying Gen.G did not look too sharp in the group stage.

Even though this team has two of the best individual players in the world in mid-laner Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong and ADC Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk, the team as a whole has left a lot to be desired.

Gen.G ended the group stage with a near-perfect 5-1 record, which is nothing to sneeze at, but it hardly shows the true picture of how they performed. In most of their games, Gen.G looked very iffy or, better said, worse than expected.

That is not to say Gen.G are a bad team. They still boast an exceptional macro play and play like a solid unit. However, they still deserve some criticism, largely because they have not been performing at the level expected of them.

Prediction

The biggest argument to be made in favor of G2 for this bout is the fact that historically, European teams (especially G2) perform well against Korean sides. That has something to do with their playstyle, which has proven to be very effective in the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) squads, although far less efficient against Chinese squads.

That is a rather lazy reason to side with G2 over Gen.G since Gen.G is slightly more aggressive than your usual Korean LoL team, but it’s still something to consider. On that note, we have to go back to what we have mentioned, that both sides looked iffy in the group stage, and they both have problems to fix if they wish to make it far.

This is where G2 could potentially outshine Gen.G once more, with their ability to quickly adapt and overcome problems, whereas Gen.G is far less flexible to make changes. On the other side, we should note that Gen.G has a slightly stronger bottom lane and arguably a better jungler, which should make the game very close.

This is one of those games that can easily go both ways. We are leaning more towards G2, largely because we can trust them more to improve in the days leading to the quarterfinals, but we don’t expect a complete blowout. A 3-2 win for G2 is something we could imagine happening and a bet worth considering.

Prediction: G2 Esports to win

Prediction: Over 4.5 maps
