Top Dota 2 Games to Wager on Wednesday, January 5

T1 vs OB.Neon

  • When: Wednesday, January 5 – 16:00 SGT

OB.Neon are 0-3 ahead of the final week of competition, and with only two more games on the schedule, they have found themselves in an unenviable position. OB.Neon still need to face T1 and Team SMG, so their chances to end the season with at least one win are slim, and it’s more than fair to start talking about possible relegation.

OB.Neon kicked off the season with a 0-2 loss against BOOM Esports, to which they added another defeat (1-2) against Execration on December 8 and a 0-2 loss against Fnatic on December 16.

Much of OB.Neon’s struggles can be attributed to the fact that the team failed to keep its roster intact for the 2021/22 season, which is unfortunate since OB.Neon showed a lot of potential last term.

Their next opponents, T1 are 2-0 with a perfect 4-0 map differential and continue to perform like a higher-class team. They’re looking like they’re still in the same form that helped them do extremely well at TI10.

It wouldn’t be too far from the truth to say that T1 are one of the strongest, if not the strongest team in the region. But we will first have to wait and see how they do against BOOM Esports, who are strong candidates to win the SEA DPC title.

OB.Neon have had some flashes of greatness so far, but they have yet to show anything that would make us trust them to cause an upset on Wednesday. This is a clash between one of the weakest and one of the strongest teams in the division, and it can only end one way.

Prediction: T1 -1.5 maps

Team SMG vs Execration

  • When: Wednesday, January 5 – 18:00 SGT

Team SMG have managed a 2-2 record after four rounds of play, which sits them in a fairly comfortable spot, safe from relegation. Although they can still drop down to seventh place, it’s doubtful it will happen since it would require OB.Neon to win both of their next two games, and Team SMG losing their next two.

Across their last four, Team SMG won against Fnatic (2-0) and Motivate.Trust Gaming (2-0), but they couldn’t deliver against T1 (0-2) and BOOM Esports (0-2). And while losing half of your games might not seem too inspiring, we have to consider the quality of the teams that beat Team SMG.

Team SMG have essentially lost only against two of the top teams in the region, which is hardly concerning. What’s more, they looked very dominant against two mid-table teams in Fnatic and MG.Trust, so it’s fair to start believing SMG can compete for the third spot.

And fittingly, the only other team that can seemingly challenge them for the bronze medal are Execration, who Team SMG will clash with on Wednesday.

Execration picked up two wins last round against OB.Neon (2-1) and TNC Predator (2-0), bouncing back from their round-one defeat against MG.Trust (0-2). And while Execration played well against across the last two rounds, it isn’t easy to praise them too much for those wins.

A win is still a win, but you can’t ignore the fact that Execration so far won only against two of the weakest teams in the division. What’s more, they struggled against MG.Trust, who are solid, but they’re not as strong as Team SMG.

Execration’s performances do not convince us, and while they have some solid pieces, Team SMG look much better all-around. Team SMG need to win this one, and we don’t believe Execration have the tools to stop them.

Prediction: Team SMG -1.5 maps
