Styrian GP – Formula 1 Odds & Picks

Written by on July 7, 2020

Like the rest of the sporting world, Formula 1 was thrown into a state of confusion once the global pandemic hit us hard in March. Races were quickly cancelled and plans for the future began almost immediately. Once other sports began to creep back into action, F1 followed suit, putting together a makeshift schedule that sees drivers and their crew spend more time in certain countries than others. That is why, for the second straight week, we are going to see a race held in Austria. The second race in the 2020 schedule will go this weekend. Once again, it will be raced at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, but will we see the same outcome as last week, when Valtteri Bottas took the checkered flag. Let’s take a look at some of the likely favorites for this race, along with their Formula 1 odds.

Formula 1 Styrian Grand Prix Race Preview

Lewis Hamilton (-125)

Last week was not the greatest for the defending F1 champion, both on and off the track. Hamilton found himself in the middle of the kneeling and Black Lives Matter debate, an issue that may have had an impact on his race weekend. First of all, he received a 3-grid penalty for failing to slow down during a yellow flag in qualifying, after which he was handed a 5-second penalty for causing a collision in the race proper. That decision dropped him from 2nd to 4th and lost him valuable points in the standings. Look for Hamilton to bounce back this weekend.

Valtteri Bottas (+250)

It would certainly appear that Valtteri Bottas loves to race at this track, as he has had some serious success here, winning 2 of his last 4 runs at the Red Bull Ring. That includes winning the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend by almost 3 seconds. He certainly sent the message that he was the man to beat with his qualifying runs, but we all know how tough it is to win in back to back weeks, as there are just so many things that can go wrong during any given race. Still, given his pedigree at this track, he might be worth a look.

Max Verstappen (+300)

The perfect example of anything happening in a race on any given week can be seen by looking at Max Verstappen’s ride in the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend. After winning this race in back to back seasons, he went into last weekend as one of the favorites to win again. The dream of winning 3 in a row was over very quickly, though, as electronics issues forced him out of the race in just the second lap. You cannot, though, ignore his history at this race, which is why I am taking him to win this weekend’s Styrian GP.

Lando Norris (+6600)

If you are looking for a real dark horse at a great price, the young British driver may well be the way to go. Norris became the third youngest driver to land on the podium, as well as the youngest British driver to do so. Was that a one off run, or can he do even better this weekend?
