2016 US Open Betting Favorites To Win The Title

One of the great things about golf is that any player in the field can have a great weekend and win a tournament. Yes, there are always favorites heading into any event, but it takes just one or two great rounds by a single player to put the pressure on those favored to win. The golf odds for 116th US Open at Oakmont (June 16 – 19) show that three players are considered to be the ones most likely to win the major title, but this is a course that is about as unforgiving as it gets. The last time the US Open was played in this little part of Pennsylvania, it was a score of +5 that was good enough to win. Angel Cabrera was the champion in that tournament back in 2007, and it may well be that we are looking at another relatively high score being good enough to win this one. Who is likely to post that best score? That depends on a lot of different factors, but these are the 3 players who the bookies seem to think will get the job done:

Jason Day (+650)

It stands to reason that the current number one player in the world would be the favorite to win the US Open. Day was actually at the #1 spot this time last year, too, but he wasn’t able to break through and get the win on that occasion. The fact that he is still sitting in the top spot a year later is a testament to how consistent he has been on the PGA tour over the past few months. Since last year’s Open, Jason Day has played in 19 tournaments on the tour, and has landed in the top 10 no less than 12 times. That is an amazing stat, but what makes it even more astounding is that he won 7 of those 19 events. That is a level of consistency that is incredibly difficult to maintain, but it’s also the reason why he is going to be getting a lot of the bettors’ money this weekend.

Rory McIlroy (+650)

The Irishman is always among the favorites in any tournament that he plays in, and for good reason. He is among the best in the PGA off the tee, as well as in approaches to the green, but it is his putter that often does him in. McIlroy switched to a conventional grip ahead of the Memorial Tournament, and it was his work on the greens that saw him finish in 4th place. He is going to need that putter to be working on the treacherous Oakmont course.

Jordan Spieth (+900)

This is a young man who seems to save his very best for the major tournaments. He won the US Open and the Masters in 2015, and would have won another green jacket earlier this year had it not been for a back 9 collapse that saw him end up in second after dominating for the majority of the tournament at Augusta. He has been a little up and down this season, but let’s not forget that this is a guy who has finished no worse than 4th in each of the last 5 major tournaments.
