This event goes all the way back to 1968 and was known as the Magnolia State Classic from its inception through 1985. From 1986 until 1998 it was then known as the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic and in 1994 in became an official PGA Tour event. From 1999 to 2006 it was known as the Southern Farm Bureau Classic and it changed sponsors again to the Viking Classic from 2007 through 2011. For one year, (2-12) it became the True South Classic before Sanderson Farms took over sponsorship in 2013.This tournament is an alternate event, meaning it is played in the same week as a higher status tournament (either a WGC or the Open Championship). This means, many of the bigger names in golf will be competing in this week’s WGC-HSBC Championships in Shanghai.Because it is an alternate event, the winner does not get a Masters invite but they do get a PGA Championship invitation and a two-year PGA Tour exemption.This year’s 78-player field features a trio of players as +2000 co-favorites, including Dylan Fritelli, Patrick Rodgers and Sungjae Im.Aaron Baddeley is a +2200 pick while Lucas Glover and 2017 winner Ryan Amour are identical +2500 picks.

A year ago, Ryan Armour was a journeyman with four seasons of PGA Tour status and over 100 starts dating all the way back to 2007. He was a Web.com Tour Finals graduate at the ripe old age of 41. His stunning win a year ago was nothing short of remarkable.

My 10 to Win

Chris Kirk

The 33-year-old Kirk finished second to Ryan Armour last year and he’s got four career victories on the PGA Tour. However, he’s playing mediocre golf right now, having missed the cut at the Safeway.

Hunter Mahan

Mahan let me down a couple of times last season in tournaments I picked him to win, but he’s playing a lot better heading into this event after a T17 finish at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in late August, T2 at the DAP Championship in September and T33 at the Albertson’s Boise Open in mid-September.

Ryan Armour

The 42-year-old defending champion is looking pretty solid after a T33 at the CIMB Classic and a T29 at the CJ Cup.

Dylan Fritelli

Frittelli is the second alternate at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, but he’ll play the in this event instead of hoping to get lucky in Asia. Fritelli was rock-solid in recording a T25 at Safeway in his PGA Tour membership debut two weeks ago. The 28-year-old South African will have a shot if plays like he did three weeks ago.

Aaron Baddeley

The 37-year-old managed to keep his card after recording just one Top 10 finish last season and five Top 25 finishes while missing the cut in 12 events. Baddeley is off to a good start this season after recording a T4 at the Safeway. Badds finished 30th in this event a year ago.

Lucas Glover

The 38-year-old was the runner-up at the Web.com TOUR Championship and finished T17 twice, including at Silverado. Glover has also gone T22, T39 and T5 at the Country Club of Jackson in his last three appearances.

Bill Haas

It’s so good to see Haas back on tour following the loss of his friend in a fatal car accident earlier this year. Haas finished T10 at the Safeway Open and definitely has the skillset to win this tournament.

Harold Varner III

The 28-year-old is looking good heading into this event after his steady T14 at the Safeway Open. Varner recorded a trio of Top 10 finishes last season and five Top 25 finishes and Varner has a short game that is almost as good as anyone’s on the planet.

Cameron Champ

This 23-year-old could turn out to be a superstar at some point in the near future. His T25 at the Safeway Open tells me he could not only contend, but win this event outright.

Sungjae Im

The 2018 Web.com Tour Player of the Year, Im looks like he’ll be on the PGA Tour in no time at all. The 20-year-old Korean finished with a fantastic T4 at the Safeway Open and a T41 at the CJ Cup@ Nine Bridges. Im, is looking like a great pick heading into this event.
