Five Golfers To Watch
- Collin Morikawa
Sixth in the Official Golf World Rankings, Morikawa is the defending champion. In 14 events this season, the 24-year-old has made the cut 11 times while recording six Top-25 finishes, four Top-10 finishes and one win in February at the WGC-Workday Championship. The California native should be quite hungry too after some uneven play over his last five outings, including a missed cut in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last weekend. Morikawa did finish T7 just prior to that at the RBC Heritage and he’s got the game to beat anyone on the planet every time he takes to the links.
- Dustin Johnson
In 10 events this season, the world No. 1 has made the cut nine times with six Top-25 finishes, four Top-10 finishes and one win in last year’s Masters. While DJ missed the cut in this year’s Masters, he did finish T13 in the RBC Heritage earlier this month. More importantly, Johnson finished tied as the runner-up in this event in each of the last two years.
- Hideki Matsuyama
In eight career PGA Championship appearances, Matsuyama has made the cut all eight times. The 2021 Masters winner finished fifth in 2015, T7 in 2016, T11 a year after that, 19th in 2018, T16 in 2019 and T22 a year ago. Six consecutive Top-25 finishes tells me Matsuyma could very well break into the winner’s circle in 2021 to win consecutive majors.
- Will Zalatoris
I’m not gonna’ lie. I was so proud of my pick for Zalatoris as my top long shot selection to win the 2021 Masters. At any rate, the 24-year-old is supremely gifted and should challenge to win majors for years to come. n 16 events this season, the sweet-swinging Californian has made the cut 15 times with 11 Top-25 finishes and six Top-10 finishes, including a stupendous second place finish in the Masters. Zalatoris finished T42 at the RBC Heritage two weeks back and should be hungry to shoot for a win here. This will be his very first PGA Championship appearance, but look at what he did in his first Masters earlier this month. I’m thinking Zalatoris is good for a Top-10 finish at the very least.
- Xander Schauffele
In 13 events this season, the 27-year-old Schauffele has made the cut 12 times with a whopping 11 Top-25 finishes and six Top-10 finishes. Schauffele doesn’t have a win, but he comes in riding a three-event streak of Top-25 finishes after missing the cut at the Player’s Championship. The Californian finished a stellar T3 at the Masters and T11 at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. In four PGA Championship appearances, Schauffele has gotten better each time out and will look to improve on consecutive finishes of T16 and last year’s T10.
