This weekend, August 25-28, sees the start of the PGA playoffs, as the race for the FedEx Cup begins with 125 players taking part in the Barclay’s PGA tournament at the Bethpage Black course in Edison, New Jersey. By the time all of this is said and done, and we move on to the next tournament, we will be down to 100 contenders. Barring a total collapse, all of the major players should still be around next week, and that includes all the guys who I believe have a legitimate shot at winning this coming weekend. There is always the possibility that a longshot could come out of nowhere and upset the online betting odds, but I actually believe that the winner will be one of the 5 following players:

Jason Day

It has been an incredible year for this guy, as he has been the absolute model of consistency. Jason Day has landed in the top 25 in 13 of the last 14 tournaments that he has played in, and he now sits atop the FedEx Cup standings with 2,735 points, thanks in large part to the 3 wins that he has had on the tour this season. Day was the comfortable winner of this event last year, beating out the rest of the field by 6 strokes. He has to be the favorite again this year.

Dustin Johnson

With two wins on the PGA Tour, including the US Open, it’s no real surprise that Johnson is sitting just 34 points behind Jason Day in the FedEx Cup standings. His most recent tournament was the World Golf Championships, where he tied for 5th, which is a nice little confidence builder coming into this one. I expect Johnson to be near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday afternoon.

Henrik Stenson

It has been a fantastic year for the Swede, as he has won the British Open, and returned from the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil with a silver medal in tow. Henrik is quite a way off the pace in the FedEx Cup standings, but a win in New Jersey could help vault him up the standings. You just have to wonder how much h has left in the tank after his Olympic Games excursion.

Rory McIlroy

The Irishman does not have a win on the PGA Tour this season, although he has picked up some silverware over in Europe, winning the Irish Open. He is currently way down the list in the FedEx Cup standings at number 36, but this is a guy that you can never count out in a big tournament. He will be sitting at a very decent price this coming weekend, and is certainly worth a little flutter.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth is 5th in the FedEx Cup standings, courtesy of a pair of wins and 6 top 10 finishes from the 17 events that he has played in this season. There are some who will be looking at his season as a bit of a disappointment, but there really wasn’t any way he was going to be able to match the magic of last year. Still a very solid bet here.
