Overview
Sergio Garcia, fresh off a Ryder Cup appearance, returns to defend his 2020 title. Garcia is the lone Ryder Cup participant in this week’s field. Sergio finished last year’s tournament at 19-under, a one-stroke victory over Peter Malnati for his 11th victory on Tour and first since 2017.
The winner of the tournament gains 500 FedEx Cup points and $1.188 million of the $6.6 million purse. Six of the past eight winners at the tournament were first-time winners on the PGA Tour.
The Course
The Country Club of Jackson opened in 1914 and plays as a par-72 stretching 7,461 yards. The course has 27 holes of championship golf, 18 of the holes undergoing a re-design by John Fought in 2008. Fought channeled his inner Donald Ross in the re-design with parkland style routing and small, undulated green complexes.
Keys to attacking this course include Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and putting. Length is not a necessity here, but accuracy off the tee historically gives players a scoring advantage. The average winning score over the past five years has been 19-under.
The Field
The second tournament of the PGA Tour’s wrap-around season will feature many unfamiliar names as many of the lower-ranked players in the world try to get a leg up in the FedEx Cup standings against a weaker field. This tournament has served as a springboard for many first-time winners on Tour.
There are five past major winners playing this week, including Garcia, Gary Woodland, Keegan Bradley, Jimmy Walker, and Lucas Glover. Will Zalatoris, the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, will be teeing it up. Zalatoris posted a T11 at the Fortinet Championship two weeks ago in the first tournament of the 2021-22 season.
Sponsorship exemptions were given to past U.S. Amateur champion Andy Ogletree (returning from injury), former college star Davis Thompson, and LSU freshman Cohen Trolio.
Other notable names include Zach Johnson, Sungjae Im, Kevin Streelman, and Matthew Wolff.
Golfers to Watch
Sam Burns (+1600) – One of the pre-tournament betting favorites, Burns will be making his first start of the season after he finished T21 or better in his final four PGA events. The 25-year old has made three of four cuts here, highlighted by a T3 finish in 2018.
Mito Pereira (+3300) – Coming into the week after a solo third at the Fortinet Championship to get his season rolling. Pereira had three top-10 finishes in eight events on Tour last season. The young Chilean ranked eighth in SG: Off-the-Tee over his previous 24 rounds of golf.
Harold Varner III (+3300) – Varner is due for his first PGA Tour victory and could make it happen this weekend. The 31-year old finished 2020-21 ranked 15th in FedEx Cup points with ten top-25 finishes in 29 events. He finished T16 at the Fortinet Championship to begin his season.
