Overview
The tournament is played at Port Royal Golf Course in Southhampton Parish, Bermuda. Tournament play begins on Thursday, October 28th, and concludes on Sunday, October 31st.
Brian Gay is the defending champion after successfully beating Wyndham Clark in a playoff for his fifth PGA Tour victory and first since 2013. Gay shot a 15-under to win the event, nine shots higher than 2019 winner Brendon Todd.
The tournament winner receives 500 FedEx Cup points and $1.17 million of the $6.5 million purse. The purse jumped from $2.5 million to its $4 million total in 2020.
Port Royal Golf Course
Port Royal Golf Course was designed by famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1970. The course underwent a multimillion-dollar redesign in 2009, headed by a member of the original design team.
The course stretches 6,842 yards and plays as a par-71. Given the lack of length to the course, the property demands accurate shots off the tee. Port Royal Golf Course is the longest track on the island.
The Bermuda Championship Field
There won’t be many household names scattered throughout the pairings this week, as you’ll see one of the weaker tournament fields of the fall season. Even with the lack of big names, a handful of recent Korn Ferry Tour graduates are fighting for a spot in the FedEx Cup standings.
Those names many have heard of teeing it up this weekend include Patrick Reed, Tommy Fleetwood, and Danny Willett. Matthew Fitzpatrick returns to the PGA Tour after locking up a European Tour victory at Valderrama earlier this month.
Names to watch coming from the Korn Ferry Tour include Stephan Jaeger, Joseph Bramlett, and Mito Pereira. Jaeger has missed the cut in two of his first three events played this season, but in his lone made cut, he went home with a T26th place finish.
The Targets
The tournament happening this early season with a handful of new faces makes it hard to predict what might happen in Bermuda. Another issue is we only have two last tournaments to pull our information from to see who has had success in the past on this track.
According to MyBookie.ag, Fitzpatrick (+1400) is the pre-tournament favorite to win it all, followed up closely by European Tour’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+1600). Either of those golfers can win this tournament, but these two are also players you could see struggling to cut come Friday afternoon.
The golfers rounding out the Top 5 features Reed (+2200), Mito Pereira (+2200), along with Ireland’s Seamus Power (+1300). Even with the lack of talent at the event, these golfers have earned their way and should make the monsoon end sometime this afternoon.
