Tournament play begins on Thursday, January 6th, and concludes on Sunday, January 9th. The location of the tournament is the first of two back-to-back events on the islands of Hawaii, with the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort hosting the TOUR’s winner-only event.

Last season due to the abbreviated schedule of 2020, the tournament expanded the field to also include the thirty players that made the 2020 Tour Championship. That allowed defending champion Harris English to claim his first victory in seven seasons and was his first of two victories in the previous year.

The purse for this no-cut event is $8.2 million with the winner earning $1.476 million. The victor also receives 500 FedEx Cup points and valuable OWGR points in the loaded field.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua

The Plantation Course is an expansive piece of property and one of two courses at Kapalua. The course features massive elevation changes, wide-open fairways, and picturesque ocean views.

Playing at approximately 7,600 yards, the course is the only track on the PGA Tour that plays as a par-73. The course was the first design by the duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, opening in 1992 and undergoing a major renovation in 2019.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Field

The only player eligible to play this week that won’t be in the field is Rory McIlroy. English will try and win become the first back-to-back champion since Geoff Ogilvy in 2009 and 2010.

Phil Mickelson returns to the island for the first time in 21 years having locked up a spot in the field with his historic victory at the PGA Championship. Xander Schauffele wasn’t a winner on Tour in 2021 but got the nod into the field as the gold medal winner from the Tokyo Olympics last summer. Schauffele is a previous winner here, having won in 2019.

Justin Thomas returns aiming for his third victory here after winning THE PLAYERS in March. Thomas won in 2016 and 2020 and finished in solo third last year. Other former winners in the field include Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

PGA pros that earned their first tournament appearance are Talor Gooch, Lucas Herbert, Erik Van Rooyan, K.H. Lee, Garrick Higgo, Seamus Power, Cameron Davis, and Joel Dahmen.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Betting Odds

Jon Rahm returns to action after missing the cut at the Fortinet Championship, and the No. 1 player in the world is the betting favorite at +750. Rahm looks to secure his seventh victory on Tour and kick off a season of high expectations for the Spaniard.

Right behind Rahm is the two-time winner Justin Thomas (+800). Thomas has had historical success on the course and finished with a solo third at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba in the fall.

Following the top two favorites is Collin Morikawa (+1000), one of the hottest golfers over the past two seasons. Morikawa picked up a pair of victories last year, including his second major at The Open Championship.

Other notables are Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele, and Viktor Hovland at +1200. Brooks Koepka (+3000), English (+3500), and Phil Mickelson (+13000) all provide some excellent value further down the list.
