Triple Crown Betting Predictions: Life Is Good Jumps Ahead of Essential Quality
2021 Kentucky Derby

- Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY
Life Is Good’s San Felipe romp makes him the top Triple Crown contender
Anybody who has watched Life Is Good run has a single thought, “Is this horse really this good?” The Baffert runner blasted a decent field in the San Felipe by as much as he wanted to in a romping, ultra-impressive, throw down the gauntlet victory.
Life Is Good took the lead from the gate, relaxed while running relatively fast fractions, and then pulled away from the field in the stretch. Don’t worry so much about the speed rating.
Think about how the Into Mischief runner didn’t once get excited. He relaxed professionally on the lead. Those are the toughest horses to beat, speed monsters who don’t get flustered.
Life Is Good is so smooth that even if a horse challenges him early, he’s likely to continue to just lope along without a care in the world. Of the contenders, including Essential Quality, Life Is Good has the best shot of winning the Triple Crown.
Weyburn has the breeding, connections, and is fast enough to become a Crown contender
Horseplayers didn’t even consider Weyburn, which is why the Gotham winner went off at 49-to-1. The Pioneerof the Nile sired colt took the Gotham by a nose over fellow underdog Crowd Trader.
Both Weyburn and Crowd Trader beat a couple of highly-touted three-year-olds, Highly Motivated and Freedom Fighter. Highly Motivated, the Chad Brown runner, didn’t seem to understand what his jockey wanted from him.
Highly Motivated started his rally way too late. A bad ride and miscommunication between horse and jockey is what caused Motivated to finish third.
Freedom Fighter may prefer sprints. Expect Bob Baffert, Freedom’s trainer, to enter him in shorter races.
As far as the winner is concerned, trainer James Jerkens said they may skip the Kentucky Derby and instead run in the Belmont Stakes. Jerkens noted that Weyburn won the Gotham in only his second lifetime race. If Weyburn skips the Derby, he can’t win the Triple Crown.
Keepmeinmind, Caddo River and Concert Tour face-off in March 13 Rebel Stakes
Helium won the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby over the weekend. Although he’s got some talent, he’ll have to improve big time to win the Kentucky Derby.
More eyes will be on the Rebel Stakes on March 13 than they were on either Tampa Bay Derby, the Gotham Stakes, or the San Felipe last Saturday. Keepmeinmind, Caddo River, and Concert Tour all have Triple Crown potential.
Which horse will prove it can grab all three legs of the Crown? We’ll have a deeper dive in our Derby update on Thursday or Friday.
