The 141st running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico race track on Saturday, May 21 will see a number of new faces enter the fray, including Cherry Wine, who skipped the Derby. This is a horse that has to be considered something of a longshot coming into this one, but you just never know what might happen. After all, we have seen more than our fair share of surprises and long odds winners in Triple Crown races over the years. Cherry Wine’s History

Cherry Wine is a Kentucky-bred colt out of Paddy O’Prado and C.S. Royce, by Unbridled’s Song. Cherry Wine finally broke his maiden at the 5th time of asking, which just happened to be his final race in his 2-year old season. There were probably not a lot of people who had very much faith in him heading into the 2016 season, but he took quite a step forward as a 3-year old.He got his 2016 season off to a winning start in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park, which he then followed up with a 4th place finish in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. His last race was a solid 3rd place effort in the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, where he came in behind fellow Preakness runner Brody’s Cause. The good news for anyone interested in taking a flutter on Cherry Wine is that he is well rested, and by all accounts has been working very well at Churchill Downs.

Jockey, Trainer, and Owner Info

You couldn’t ask for much more Triple Crown experience than what you get with Robby Albarado, who will be the jockey aboard Cherry Wine. He has been in the money in 9 Triple Crown races, including being the winning jockey with Curlin at the 2009 Preakness Stakes. He also has a second and third place finish at the Preakness on his resume. Albarado has career earnings just shy of $200 million, which puts him among the top earners in the sport.Trainer Dale L. Romans has a couple of horses in the Preakness, his other being Creator. Romans has a bit of a history in this race, and has had 2 winners there since 2009, with Curlin and Rachel Alexandra his previous winning horses. Cherry Wine is owned by Frank L Jones, Jr , Frank Shoop.

Preakness Outlook

The fact that Cherry Wine has never won a graded stakes race tells you that he is up against it on Saturday. I don’t really give him any shot to win, and would probably look elsewhere.
