Gulfstream Park Picks for Saturday, April 18

Race 4 – 2:15 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $12,500 Claiming

2 of the 3 chalks look tough to beat. But which chalk should we put on top? 5/2 Krachenwagen gets the call. First, because Krachenwagen is trained by Michael De Paulo and because Mario Fuentes rides, the 4-year-old gelded son of Head Chopper might offer better odds than the 5/2 morning line Horse Racing Odds . Krachenwagen is 2-0 in its last couple. Those wins happened under almost identical circumstances that this race presents.

Chase Runner will attempt to take these gate-to-wire. The third choice on the morning line, Runner finished second to Krachenwagen in his last. The Laura Cazares trained runner is in the best form of any horse in this event. If Krachenwagen feels it’s time to take a breather, Chase Runner figures to run off to a massive lead. Consider for the win if this one offers better odds than Krachenwagen.

Unbridled Holiday didn’t look like the same horse after the gelding’s first since last June. We’ll keep the 2/1 morning line off our tickets. Instead, let’s make Cool Gizmo third. Another De Paulo trained equine, Gizmo takes a massive drop from a $51K n1x race into this. The 8/1 morning line gelding can run on for third.

  • Win: Krachenwagen
  • Place: Chase Runner
  • Show: Cool Gizmo

Race 8 – 4:21 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $30,000 Claiming

Race 8 sets up for Luis Saez’s mount, South Sea. The 6-year-old Into Mischief gelding could be lone speed if Tyler Gaffalione aboard Brass Compass doesn’t put the pedal to the floor. When Luis rides lone speed, forget it. If nobody goes with Sea, you can stand in line to cash your ticket.

Harryhee is in awful form. But trainer Brett McLellan drops the winner of over $318K from optional claiming $62.5 to this $30,000 claimer. Not only that but if Brass Compass doesn’t fire, which is possible, Harryhee will be the closest to South Sea as they turn for home.

If the speed bothers South Sea, a pony like Where Paradise Lay could get up for the win. Stanley Hough wins 23% with his sprinters. Like many in here, Lay drops from the 62.5 optional claiming level. If Brass Compass and Harryhee bother South Sea, don’t be surprised if this one runs on for at least a piece. Using on top and bottom of exotics makes sense.

  • Win: South Sea
  • Place: Harryhee
  • Show: Where Paradise Lay

Race 10 – 5:17 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $50,000 Starter Optional Claiming

Saez takes the call aboard another contender in the tenth. Malibu Moon sired Blood Moon goes second time for trainer Danny Gargan, a 26% winning move. Gargan has won 38% for the year and 32% at Gulfstream. Danny put a sweet work into this one on April 9.

Trainer Mike Maker grabbed Causalistic in that one’s last race, a $40K claimer. Causalistic finished second by a neck to Plato, the speed in this one. The Tonalist sired runner has a first and second from 2 races at the distance.

Gemo could get a nice trip. Angel Rodriguez should put Gemo behind front runners Plato and Like You. Both Blood Moon and Causalistic figure to run by Gemo, but before that happens, the 3-year-old might grab the lead as they turn for home.

  • Win: Blood Moon
  • Place: Causalistic
  • Show: Gemo
