Gulfstream Park Picks for Friday, May 29

Race 4 – 2:15 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $50,000 Starter Optional Claiming

Mike Maker trained Sunset Promise takes a steep drop in class from optional claiming $75,000 to this $50,000 optional claimer. That alone makes this one a solid contender. Another reason to like the Broken Vow sired 3-year-old filly? Although she finished eighth in her last race, she’ll enter this with the best last out speed rating.

Cairo Prince sired second choice Toffen, a lightly-raced 3-year-old filly from the Brian Lynch barn. Toffen broke her maiden two back. She finished second in her last by half a length. Both those races were at a mile. The added distance should suit her.

Kenny McPeek has saddled Fancified to a couple of straight victories. She closed smartly to win both of her last two races. Fancified may have to close into a soft pace on Friday, though. We’ll use on the bottom of exotics.

  • Win: Sunset Promise
  • Place: Cairo Prince
  • Show: Fancified

Race 8 – 4:21 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt –$16,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Ramon Minguet trained Sayonara Baby ran too well to lose in her last. If not for the chalk, she’d have won by open lengths. Sayonara faces that same chalk on Friday. The difference? Flora Fantasy changes barns and could bounce off the last race top effort.

Flora Fantasy could offer 4/5 when they break from the gate on Friday. Still, it’s impossible to leave Cowtown Cat’s daughter out of the exacta. Trainer Jorge Delgado wins 27% first after the claim and Fantasy just beat the top choice in her last race. She’s won 3 in a row. Will she make it 4? Probably. But we can’t endorse on top at the expected odds.

Jockey Paco Lopez will try to take these gate to wire aboard How Sweep It Is. The Flat Out sired 4-year-old filly breaks from post-position 1. But Sweep ran awful in her last. We’ll take a wait and see approach before playing to win.

  • Win: Sayonara Baby
  • Place: Flora Fantasy
  • Show: How Sweep It Is

Race 9 – 4:52 pm ET – 5 Furlongs Turf – $25,000 Starter Optional Claiming

This race sets up for 5/2 on the morning line Swirling Candy. The 3-year-old filly changes barns from Cheryl Winebaugh to Jose D’Angelo. Jose wins 37% first after the claim. He adds blinkers and gets Irad Ortiz to ride.

The 20/1 morning line on Trevess shouldn’t hold. The 3-year-old daughter of Kantharos broke her maiden by 7 lengths in her last. Yes, this is her first time on turf. But she’s bred to enjoy the surface, and nobody appears to have the same early speed that she possesses.

Tweet Away Robin broke her maiden by 18 lengths. She changes barns from Kathleen O’Connell to Mike Maker. There’s a lot to like about this one, including Paco taking the call. The main issue? This is Robin’s first against winners, first on the grass, and first since January.

  • Win: Swirling Candy
  • Place: Trevess
  • Show: Tweet Away Robin
