Gulfstream Park Picks for Saturday, May 2

Race 9 – 4:53 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $75,000 Honey Ryder Stakes

Bettors might overlook Highland Glory. The Barclay Tagg trained runner broke her maiden in January. She scored in her first against winners by taking a $100,000 stakes race. Highland Glory showed big time improvement from the maiden win to the stakes win. Anymore improvement makes her a serious contender.

Evoutante has the looks of a top-class racehorse. She easily broke her maiden in her last. But that was over dirt. She ran over grass in her first race and finished third. Trainer Kenneth McPeek wins 9% with dirt to turf runners. That’s from 145 horses. What’s on paper doesn’t justify the 8/5 morning line odds. Evoutante is hard to back to win at those odds.

Mike Maker puts the saddle on Stunning Sky. On Feb. 29, the Declaration of War sired runner bombed in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes. She came back to finish fourth in the same stakes race Highland Glory won. Maker does well with fillies on the grass. Consider for the top spot if neither of the top two choices are attractive.

  • Win: Highland Glory
  • Place: Evoutante
  • Show: Stunning Sky

Race 10 – 5:25 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt – $100,000 Big Drama Stakes

Red Crescent has a shot to upset this field. The 6/1 morning line odds 6-year-old gelding hasn’t raced since January. Trainer Jon Vinson doesn’t win much with horses off a layoff, but Crescent has the top speed rating for the distance. Granted, that was in a $62,500 optional claimer back in October. Still, 6/1 is an attractive price on a horse that aired the last time it ran at the distance of today’s event.

Noble Drama has 2 second-place finishes from 3 races at the 7 furlong distance. The David Fawkes trainee drops back in distance from 1 1/16 miles. Drama raced well the last time off a layoff.

Chad Brown trained Network Effect could dominate this field. But the runner failed big time in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile. Then, in his first race back, he couldn’t get by Wind of Change as the favorite. Best to use underneath since Network Effect figures to offer underlay odds.

  • Win: Red Crescent
  • Place: Noble Drama
  • Show: Network Effect

Race 11 – 5:57 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $75,000 English Channel Stakes

Trainer George Weaver is winning 32% at Gulfstream. That’s one of the reasons we’re putting 10/1 on the morning line Ever Dangerous on top. Even though Dangerous is a last-out maiden winner, this race is wide-open. The way Ever Dangerous broke his maiden implies he’s a runner.

Jockey Irad Oritz Jr. gets the call aboard Gufo. The Christophe Clement trained son of Declaration of War has won its last couple. Gufo should get a decent trip breaking from post-position 4.

Danny Gargan shows up at Gulfstream Park with Don Juan Kitten. The Kitten Joy sired runner broke its maiden on October 5. Don Juan Kitten ran a respectable third in his first versus winners. Gargan wins 27% with layoff runners. Danny wins 28% with shippers. Consider for the win slot if others don’t appeal.

  • Win: Ever Dangerous
  • Place: Gufo
  • Show: Don Juan Kitten
