Saturday sees the 142 nd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, and I have to say it is one of the most wide open fields I have seen in quite some time. Nyquist is the morning line favorite, but  despite being unbeaten in his first 7 races, there are still a number of questions about his ability to win a race at this length, and with a field of this size. Betting to Win

Most casual bettors are likely going to stick with trying to pick the winner and making a single bet. The good news here is that with a 20 horse field, your payouts are likely to be pretty decent even if you ended up cashing a winning ticket on the favorite. Nyquist opened up at 3-1 in the morning line, and is sure to be the pick for many, but I’m not entirely sold on him. He has won a number of different ways in his 7 races, but at the 13 post there is the possibility he could get stuck in the pack early on. I’m looking for a horse that is going to sit just off the pace, and who has the finishing ability to get it done coming down the long home stretch. My money is going to be on Mor Spirit, a Bob Baffert trained horse who is 12-1 in the morning line.

Betting the Exacta

There is some real money to be made if you can pick the correct order of finish for first and second. This is very tough to do, which is why I recommend boxing 3 or 4 horses. When you go the box route, you can win if any combination of your horses finishes first or second. It’s a pricier wager, but with the odds so high, you should easily make a profit with a winning ticket. I am going to go with 4 horses in my exacta box, which will cost $12 for a $1 stake. I’m taking Mor Spirit, Nyquist, Gun Runner, and Exaggerator.

Betting the Trifecta and Superfecta

The trifecta requires you to correctly pick the order of finish of the top 3, while the superfecta requires you to pick the top 4. Again, I would go with the box here, but this time I am going with 5 horses instead of 4 just to improve my chances a little. A $1 trifecta box costs $60, but you can get that down to $24 if you stick to 4 horses. The Superfecta would cost $120 with 5 horses, and $24 with 4.
