Los Alamitos Horse Racing Picks for Friday, July 3

Race 2 – 4:28 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Dirt – $18,000 Starter Allowance

3/1 on the morning line Lucky Romano might have a tactical advantage over the other speed. Romano goes from 1,000 feet quarter-horse races to this 5 ½ furlong dash. The Lucky Pulpit sired runner does have a win at the distance and main speed rival Fast Cotton breaks to the inside.

If Lucky Romano isn’t at the top of its game, Doug O’Neil trained Fast Cotton could take the lead and never look back. The High Cotton sired 5-year-old gelding is super-quick from the gate. Also, Cotton cuts back in distance half a length. That could be all it takes for this one to return to the winner’s circle.

On May 22, Rick’s Dream ran a real nice race. But, the 6-year-old gelding hadn’t run that well in a long time. There’s a chance Rick bounces in this. Anything other than a significant bounce keeps the Reed Saldana trained runner in the trifecta, though.

  • Win: Lucky Romano
  • Place: Fast Cotton
  • Show: Rick’s Dream

Race 5 – 5:58 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Dirt – $25,000 Starter Allowance

It will be tough to keep 2/1 morning line chalk Camby from the winner’s circle. The Mark Glatt trained 6-year-old gelded son of Candy Ride is in great form. Camby won it’s last by 4 ¼ lengths. In the race before, the gelding finished second. We’ll put the chalk on top.

There was a time when trainer Craig Dollase won Southern California stakes races on the regular. Dollase has a couple of wins from 33 runners so far this year. He sends out super-quick Treasure Hunter, a 6/1 morning line equine, in Race 5. Treasure Hunter shows an excellent work on June 27. So, we’re not worried that this one didn’t care for the 1000 foot event in its last.

Trainer Hector Palma wins 25% first after the claim. That’s why we give More Honor a big chance to take the show money. The More Than Ready sired gelding won a 7-furlong claiming race by 4 ¼ lengths at Santa Anita in its last. We’re using the Palma runner.

  • Win: Camby
  • Place: Treasure Hunter
  • Show: More Honor

Race 6 – 6:28 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

The race sets up for Ava’s Charm, but we’ll try to beat the 2/1 morning line favorite trained by Bob Baffert. Who do we like to finish ahead of Ava’s Charm? Last out maiden winner Saint’s Paynter should be the quickest out of the gate. If Saint’s Paynter gets the lead, she might run right to the winner’s circle. Trainer Andrew Lerner wins 19% with his last out maiden winners. Lerner wins 23% with horses racing off a 90-plus days layoff. The 8/1 morning line makes Saint’s Paynter a huge overlay.

Ava’s Charm should have no trouble getting into the exacta. Now a 4-year-old old, the Baffert miss has a 1-1-1 record from 4 races. The rest of the field breaks to the inside of her. So, jockey Drayden Van Dyke will have some options.

Trainer Mike McCarthy drops Into the South from straight allowance ranks into this allowance optional claimer. Sired by Into Mischief, Into the South goes back to dirt after racing on Golden Gate’s all-weather. She didn’t seem to care for that surface. She could improve enough to take the win. So, consider on top and bottom of your exotic tickets.

  • Win: Saint’s Paynter
  • Place: Ava’s Charm
  • Show: Into the South
