Oaklawn Park Picks for Thursday, April 2

Race 5 – 4:05 pm ET – 1 1/6 Miles Dirt – $50,000 Claiming

Robertino Diodoro wins 24% first after the claim. So even though Caribbean goes up in class, the 6/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds runner is the choice to win this $50K claimer. Few trainers can improve an equine from the Steve Asmussen barn. Diodoro is one of the few. Billy Ocean’s favorite horse pops at a price.

Asmussen saddles Tikhvin Flew. The Street Sense sired 4-year-old took a vacation after a tough 7-furlong allowance turf sprint at Belmont back in September. Steve doesn’t always get them ready off the bench. But if this one is ready, watch out.

Steve’s other runner, New Mexico, could take the lead and not look back. That’s a massive drop from an $86K allowance to this claimer. Consider for the top spot if the odds rise.

  • Win: Caribbean
  • Place: Tikhvin Flew
  • Show: New Mexico

Race 6 – 4:36 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $61,000 Allowance

Trainer Dewaine Loy is 0-5 with last out maiden winners. There doesn’t appear to be a ton of early hoof in this, though. Loy’s charge, Lil Tater, broke the maiden by 10 lengths in her last. If she grabs the lead, she might not remember that she’s not supposed to win first time after breaking the maiden.

3/1 morning line chalk Savedbyanangel should duel with Lil Tater. The Loy trainee has the upper hand because she breaks outside of this John Prather runner. If Lil Tater doesn’t go, Savedbyanangel could get it done. Expect the odds to hold because the speed ratings are light.

The race could set up for the Karl Broberg runner, Jeri Bella. She didn’t like the mud in her last, which is why she finished fourth by 3 lengths. But she could excel going back to a fast surface. Still, she might have to go wide, which is why she’s best to use underneath.

  • Win: Lil Tater
  • Place: Savedbyanangel
  • Show: Jeri Bella

Race 8 – 5:38 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Anybody who follows horse racing Odds has heard the name Larry J. Jones. LJJ is one of the top horsemen in the United States. He’s especially gifted with fillies and mares. On Thursday, he saddles 8/1 last out maiden winner Quick Decision. The 3-year-old daughter of Istan broke her maiden like a runner. She can make it 2 straight.

Summer Fortune bounced after breaking her maiden. Trainer Jeremiah Englehart may have overshot by running Violence’s daughter in a $100K stakes after just a maiden victory. If she returns to the maiden form, and she could because the stakes debacle happened last November, she will challenge for the win.

Steve Asmussen saddles Jade D’Oro, a Medaglia d’Oro sired runner who has a win and 2 thirds in 3 starts. She got the lead in her last but failed to hang on. If jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. can ration her speed, she should perform well on Thursday.

  • Win: Quick Decision
  • Place: Summer Fortune
  • Show: Jade D’Oro
