Oaklawn Park Picks for Friday, May 1

Race 7 – 5:06 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $165,000 Arkansas Breeders’ Championship

Trainer Robertino Diodoro and jockey Tyler Baze hook-up with Hamazing Vision. The 5-year-old gelded son of Hamazing Destiny has won 2 straight. Vision has a 3-1-1 record from 8 races at this distance. Hamazing Vision always fires. If Tyler pushes the go button at the right time, this guy should have no trouble getting to the wire first.

Promising Shoes is another who has had success at the distance. The Federico Villafranco trained 6-year-old gelding has 4 wins, 3 seconds, and a third from 14 races at 1 1/16 miles. Ricardo Santana rides while Shoes should get the perfect set-up.

Morning line chalk K J’s Nobility figures to get the most play. 47% at the meet winning trainer Cecil Borel saddles. Brother Calvin Borel rides. K J’s has won 3-of-4. But all 3 wins were at 6 furlongs. In the gelding’s lone race at 1 1/16 miles, K J’s finished second. Tough to put on top at the expected odds.

  • Win: Hamazing Vision
  • Place: Promising Shoes
  • Show: K J’s Nobility

Race 8 – 5:38 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $80,000 Gardenia Stakes

Trainer Larry Jones is awesome with fillies. That’s why we have no problem putting 12/1 on the morning line Quick Decisions on top in Friday’s Gardenia Stakes. The Istan sired runner broke her maiden at over 8/1. In her first against winners, she won at over 7/1 odds. She’ll get the lead in this. If jockey Terry Thompson can ration her speed, or get out to a long lead, the Gardenia will be Quick Decisions to lose.

Horse racing fans know the name Danny Gargan. The New York based trainer ships Ice Princess to run in this. The Palace Malice filly has 3 wins and a fourth from 4 lifetime races. The fourth place finish happened in the Grade 1 Frizette, her second lifetime race. She’s much better than the 10/1 morning line implies.

Godolphin owned Antoinette offers 8/1 on the morning line. Trainer Bill Mott conditioned this one to a third place finish in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks in her last. Mott wouldn’t run her unless he felt he could win. Consider using the Hard Spun sired filly on top and bottom.

  • Win: Quick Decisions
  • Place: Ice Princess
  • Show: Antoinette

Race 9 – 6:09 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $400,000 Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes

Mott has another long shot contender in the Fantasy Stakes on Friday. 12/1 on the morning line Harvey’s Lil Goil takes a step up in class after winning a $100,000 stakes, but so what? No horse running this weekend at Oaklawn Park is as well-bred as this 2-of-3 winning runner. American Pharoah sired Lil Goil while her mom is a Tapit broodmare.

Steve Asmussen puts the saddle on Fire Coral. The 15/1 morning line shot has gotten better with every race. She’s on a 2-race win streak. Susan Moulton purchased the daughter of Curlin for $420,000 in 2018.

Venetian Harbor figures to go off the chalk. The Munnings sired, Richard Baltas trained filly will go right to the lead. If the others allow her to relax, she’ll take these gate-to-wire. But others in this have speed.

  • Win: Harvey’s Lil Goil
  • Place: Fire Coral
  • Show: Venetian Harbor
