Santa Anita Park Picks for Friday, June 12

Race 3 – 5:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $50,000 Claiming

Doug O’Neil trained A Thousand Dreams could pull off the slight upset victory. The Carpe Diem sired runner broke it’s maiden at this distance over Del Mar’s turf last July. In the filly’s first race in 2020, she ran decently enough in a 5 ½ furlong sprint to garner a look to win this.

At Santa Anita Park, trainer Peter Miller wins with 28% of his entrants. Miller charge Going to Vegas most likely won’t hold her 9/5 odds. But there’s a reason why. If the pace is swift, she should take this no problem.

Lovely Lila tries turf for the first time since a maiden race last August at Del Mar. Lila’s trainer, Vladimir Cerin, wins 33% first after the claim. She’s yet another with a  chance to get win honors.

  • Win: A Thousand Dreams
  • Place: Going to Vegas
  • Show: Lovely Lila

Race 6 – 6:30 pm ET – 1  Mile Dirt – $12,500 Claiming

There is a ton of speed signed on for this. All that early speed could set it up for 12/1 on the morning line Super Classic. Trained by Ruben Gomez, the Super Saver sired 5-year-old roan failed to make an impact in his last in February. The fractions were super-soft in that race. On Friday, the fractions could be more in line with what Super Classic saw in the Jan. 30 race, a 23.1 first-quarter and 46.4 half. Heck, because there’s so much early speed, Super Classic could run into a 45 half-mile.

8/5 on the morning line Abusive Gary has a chance to go gate-to-wire. The problem? There’s a lot of other speed. We do feel Gary buries the other front runners, though. It’s impossible to leave the class-dropping, morning line chalk, from the exacta.

All I Can Say closed into fast-fractions to get up for third in a 6 furlong race in the gelding’s first since Feb. 2019. That’s a good tune-up race for this. So, use in all slots in your exotics.

  • Win: Super Classic
  • Place:  Abusive Gary
  • Show: All I Can Say

Race 7 – 7:00 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Turf – $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming

Trainer Mark Glatt gave Gypsy Blu a vacation after the huge failure in the Grade 3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes. Blu loves this turf course, having gone 3-1-1 from 7 races. Glatt is winning at 33% while jockey Abel Cedillo rode her in the last 3.

The race sets up for closer Querelle. Trainer Peter Miller puts the saddle on the 4-year-old Violence sired filly. Querelle is in great form with 2 wins and a second from her last 3 events. She can get it done. But the odds to win will likely drift lower than the 5/2 morning line.

Great Return is 8/5 on the morning line. If the odds bounce up from 8/5, consider for the win. The guess here is that bettors pound her at the windows, though. Return is a must use in all exotic slots, but unless the win odds show value, she’s hard to back on top.

  • Win:  Gypsy Blu
  • Place: Querelle
  • Show: Great Return
