Santa Anita Park Picks for Friday, May 15

Race 1 – 3:30 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Turf – $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Trainer Ron Ellis doesn’t saddle a ton of horses. When he does, we had better pay attention. Ron’s got a good one going in the first on Friday. 4/1 on the morning line Drop the Chalupa won at first asking. Even though the maiden score happened over the dirt, Chalupa is bred to love the lawn. The works leading up to this are excellent while jockey Jose Valdivia is a grass riding master.Don’t expect Kanderel to keep his 6/1 morning line odds. Richard “Papa” Mandella trains, Candy Ride sired, and Kanderel cuts back in distance from a mile. If you like this one, go for it. Just don’t get too excited about the 6/1 morning line because you won’t get that.Trainer Andrew Lerner gelded Rager after his last. The Into Mischief sired runner performed well in a couple of races at Oaklawn. The return to turf may help this one. But we suspect the Lerner runner wants more ground.
  • Win: Drop the Chalupa
  • Place: Kanderel
  • Show: Rager

Race 5 – 5:30 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

American Pharoah jockey Victor Espinoza picks up the reins on 6/1 morning line Ellie Arroway. Last year, the Street Boss sired 4-year-old filly broke her maiden at this distance over this turf course. A great work on May 6 proves she’s ready for her first race back after the S.A. shutdown.Heather Grey has a ton of early speed. Jockey Aaron Gryder figures to get her out of the gate before allowing her to settle right behind the front runners. If things open around the turn, Aaron could push her through on the rail. The 8/1 morning line makes this contender one to consider for the top spot.Mike Smith takes the call aboard Hollywood Girl. The John Shirreff’s trainee hasn’t raced since April 2019. But Shirreff’s always takes his time with his horses and nobody can question this one’s talent.
  • Win: Ellie Arroway
  • Place: Heather Grey
  • Show: Hollywood Girl

Race 8 – 7:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Muchly looks like a solid play to grab the win money on Friday. The Simon Callaghan trained runner gets Flavien Prat to ride. She ran well in a race in March even though she ended up sixth. That was her first in the U.S. She can improve off that effort.Lavender finished ahead of Muchly in that event on March 7. Like Muchly, the Born to Sea sired filly should benefit from all the speed signed up for this. Lavender is good enough to win on Friday. Consider for the top spot if you’re not sold on Muchly. The favorite should be Quick. She’s 5/2 on the morning line and comes out of a 5 ½ furlong sprint on the grass. Jockey Umberto Rispoli could take the lead with her or settle behind the other speed. Quick has won at 1 ¼ miles. So, distance won’t be an issue. Her odds will be, though. This race is too deep to settle on the favorite to win.
  • Win: Muchly
  • Place: Lavender
  • Show: Quick
