Santa Anita Park Picks for Monday, May 25

Race 6 – 6:05 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Ragtime Blues broke its maiden score at Oaklawn Park in April. The Bob Baffert trained 3-year-old took the lead and bounded to a head victory in a tough maiden race. Irad Ortiz Jr. comes in to ride while Baffert wins right back 22% of the time. Also, Blues should get the lead. It’s tough to go against the chalk in the sixth at Santa Anita on Monday.

Scarto goes from the Amador Sanchez barn to Mike Puype. The speedy Paynter progeny won a $60,000 stakes race in his last. Scarto probably can’t keep up with Ragtime Blues. But if that one decides to rate, who knows? Maybe, the second-choice gets the lead and doesn’t stop. Consider for the top and bottom of your exacta.

Keith Desormeaux trained Zimba Warrior could turn into a nice 3-year-old. Scarto and Ragtime Blues are too fast for Zimba to break into the exacta, though. We’re using in the show slot.

  • Win: Ragtime Blues
  • Place: Scarto
  • Show: Zimba Warrior

Race 9 – 7:38 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $300,000 Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile

Trainer Chad Brown puts the saddle on 7/2 on the morning line Raging Bull. The Grade 1 placed runner has a 2-2-1 record from 6 races at a mile. Not only that, but top jockey Joel Rosario rides. Chad has put some decent works into this one since the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in September.

Next Shares should offer much less than 12/1 on the morning line. The Richard Baltas trained equine finished third by a neck in the Frank Kilroe Mile over this turf in its last. Shares won the Grade 2 Seabiscuit at Del Mar last November. A fantastic work on May 16 shows that the winner of close to $1.8 million is ready.

River Boyne has every right to make it 3 in a row. Boyne has 8 wins from 13 races over Santa Anita’s grass. River might be over his head versus horses like Raging Bull, though. We’ll relegate to third with the expectation that the Jeff Mullins trainee goes off an underlay.

  • Win: Raging Bull
  • Place: Next Shares
  • Show: River Boyne

Race 11 – 7:00 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Turf– $300,000 Grade 1 Gamely Stakes

Brown has a couple of contenders in the Gamely. The one we prefer is 5/1 on the morning line Beautiful Lover. A 4-year-old filly sired by Arch; Beautiful Lover finished second in her last. She could be coming into her own. Also, there appears to be enough speed to flatter her excellent closing kick.

Expect the other horse Chad trains, Etoile, to go off at close to even money. She ran against much better in France. Joel Rosario, no doubt, will make a trip from post-position 1 and if Beautiful Lover benefits from a fast pace, so will Etoile. But this is the favorites first race in the U.S. Sometimes they win at first asking in the states. Sometimes they don’t.

Ollies Candy almost pulled off the front-running upset score in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom. If this were on dirt, she’d be the top pick. Trainer John Sadler wins just 6% with his dirt to turf runners, though. Ollie is a must use but we can’t endorse for the win.

  • Win: Beautiful Lover
  • Place: Etoile
  • Show: Ollies Candy
