Santa Anita Park Picks for Saturday, May 16

Race 6 – 6:00 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $150,000 Echo Eddie Stakes

At 4/1, we could do worse than put Phantom Boss on top in the Echo Eddie Stakes. Trainer Jorge Periban conditioned the 3-year-old colt to a couple of wins and a third in his first 3 races. One of the victories was in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor. Boss stumbled in his last, a stakes race at Del Mar. If he doesn’t stumble on Saturday, jockey Drayden Van Dyke should put him in the perfect position from the outside post to take this.

There’s a ton of speed in this. That’s why Rookie Mistake has a shot to get into the exacta. The Doug O’Neil trained runner’s sire is Square Eddie, which makes the Reddam Racing 3-year-old colt a half brother to Echo Eddie. Jockey Mario Gutierrez should put Rookie right behind the front runners. Mario could push Rookie Mistake past Phantom Boss. So, also consider for the top spot.

Big Sweep dominated his competition at first asking. Trainer Mark Glatt wins 8% with his last out maiden winners, though. That percentage isn’t good enough to put the chalk on top.

  • Win: Phantom Boss
  • Place: Rookie Mistake
  • Show: Big Sweep

Race 7 – 6:30 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming

Dogtag will go off the favorite, but it’s hard to find a contender that beats the Richard Mandella trained runner. East coast conditioner Chad Brown had put the saddle on Dogtag. In the War Front sired filly’s first for Papa Mandella, she finished second at close to 4/1 odds. Not only was that the first under Mandella’s care, it was also Dogtag’s first race since last August. She should win this.

Neil Drysdale trained Desert Oasis is a quality animal. She won her race two back. That happened at Del Mar last July. Then, she won her last race, a February event at Santa Anita. Drysdale takes a ton of time with his horses. If Desert Oasis shows up on Saturday, we must consider her a top contender.

6/1 on the morning line Don’t Blame Judy could get into the trifecta. There’s a ton of speed in this and she’s one of the quality closers. Judy will save a lot of ground from post-position 1. If jockey Giovanni Franco pulls her out in time, who knows? Consider for the top and bottom in your exotics.

  • Win: Dogtag
  • Place: Desert Oasis
  • Show: Don’t Blame Judy

Race 8 – 7:00 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $150,000 Evening Jewel Stakes

This race sets up for 12/1 morning line Warrior’s Moon. There’s a ton of speed signed on, Moon cuts back in distance from a mile, and trainer Peter Eurton wins 26% with ponies going turf to dirt. Don’t expect horseplayers to allow Warrior’s Moon to go off at the morning line odds. But even if the odds are cut in half, she’s the top pick.

Bulletproof One would be our top selection if she didn’t have to face another front runner. The chalk could still win this. She’s the fastest horse in the race. If Speedy Gigi just to her outside doesn’t press, Bulletproof might win this going away. We’re using in an exacta box with Warrior’s Moon to be safe.

Bayern sired Bella Vita has yet to try dirt. Like Peter Eurton, Simon Callaghan does well with turf to dirt runners, winning 27% of the time. Also, Bella Vita should get a nice pace setup for her closing kick.

  • Win: Warrior’s Moon
  • Place: Bulletproof One
  • Show: Bella Vita
