Tampa Bay Downs Picks for April 8

Race 3 – 1:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt –$16,000 Claiming

Maria Bowersock claimed Graycliff after that one won at first asking in a maiden event on Feb. 28. Graycliff failed to do much running first-time for Bowersock. But the trainer wins 50% second after the claim, meaning Maria use the first race as a prep. Graycliff heads into this off a stunning work. The 6/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds are too good to pass up.

If Tipsy Again runs to the last out maiden score, nobody will catch the 3-year-old filly. It’s a massive step up from maiden claiming $16K to an open claiming $16K race. Jockey Antonio Gallardo does stick, though. So, consider for the win slot if the odds drift higher.

Bareback Fun broke the maiden but then failed miserably first time against winners. Check out that race, though, a $75K optional claimer. This is, obviously, a massive drop. So massive that BF is tough to put on top but not tough to add to the trifecta.

  • Win: Graycliff
  • Place: Tipsy Again
  • Show: Bareback Fun

Race 6 – 3:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$16,000 Claiming

Jockey Sammy Camacho and trainer Gerald Bennett often join forces with live runners. In Race 6 on Wednesday, that live runner is 9/2 on the morning line Itsagimmee’s Girl. Sammy will try to steal this race on the front end with the 5-year-old mare. Although those tactics didn’t work going 1 1/6 miles 2 back, they did work in the last race. Itsagimmee’s Girl has a 3-2-1 record from 8 races at the distance and a 4-6-1 record from 16 races over the grass.

She’s Dynomite should be in a good position to get past Itsagimmee’s Girl. The Edward Allard runner lost to the top choice by a neck in her last. She can turn the tables, but she might lose ground unless jockey Wilmer Garcia guns her from the gate because she breaks from post-position 1.

Class dropper Monkey Mind is another with front-running speed. Camacho aboard Itsagimmee’s Girl can wait and see what Raul Mena aboard Monkey Mind does because they break right outside of that rival. That gives Sammy and his mount the edge. Play against for the win unless the odds drift higher than the morning line.

  • Win: Itsagimmee’s Girl
  • Place: She’s Dynomite
  • Show: Monkey Mind

Race 8 – 4:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$18,000 Maiden Special Weight

No world beaters have shown up in Race 8 at Tampa on Wednesday. That’s why it makes sense to go with 15/1 on the morning line Kitten’s Empress. Since she’s a Kitten’s Joy runner, Empress has turf breeding for days. She also has a consistent work tab. Who knows? If trainer Ignacio Correas has her ready and she’s feeling good, she could pop at over 20/1 Horse Racing Odds.

There’s a good chance Clear as Day goes off the favorite. Trainer Michael Stidham wins 27% at Tampa Bay Downs. Stidham also has a reputation for getting them ready for the lawn. Clear as Day can take these gate-to-wire, but she has 3 second place finishes from 7 races. It’s tough to back horses in maiden races that have already failed so many times.

Windfall Profit won’t hold it’s 6/1 morning line odds. First, Claude McGaughey trains. Shug, as racing fans call him, is a hall of fame conditioner. Second, Profit’s best races have happened over the turf. Finally, Shug wins 26% with ponies going first time on Lasix. Because Windfall Profit’s odds figure to dive from the morning line, we’ll use her in exotics but shun her for the win slot.

  • Win: Kitten’s Empress
  • Place: Clear as Day
  • Show: Windfall Profit
