Tampa Bay Downs Picks for April 1

Race 3 – 1:30 pm ET – 6 ½ Furlongs Dirt –$16,000 Maiden Claiming

This is a great race to take a shot. Esor runs for 23% at the meet winning trainer Victor Carrasco. The 3-year-old Rattlesnake colt gets blinkers, which isn’t a winning move for Carrasco. There are no world beaters in this field, though, and the 8/1 morning line is juicy.

Another 8/1 morning line runner, Beyond the Stars, has a real shot for second. Trainer Anthony Granitz wins 25% with his second career race runners, 32% first-time blinkers, and 22% going down 2+ class levels.

Three Olivez gets blinkers, which should keep the Robert Raymond runner’s mind on business. Olivez cuts back in distance, which might not be a plus in this race. That’s the main knock for making this one third.

  • Win: Esor
  • Place: Beyond the Stars
  • Show: Three Olivez

Horse Racing Odds Race 4 – 2:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$10,000 Claiming

Scarlet Bow goes up in class and dirt to turf, but it’s impossible to ignore the Michael Wright runner. The 5-year-old mare will be hunting for her fourth straight win. She has a couple of victories on dirt while 21% winning jockey Daniel Centeno has been aboard for the last 3. Sometimes, a horse gets a taste for victory and they get addicted to the taste. That could be Scarlet Bow.

Trainer Moises Yanez puts the saddle on Elusive Ryder. The Elusive Quality 6-year-old mare is another with great dirt form that her connections hope translates to the turf. Based on her breeding she should love the lawn. So far in her career, she hasn’t. But, she’s won 3-of-4, which makes her a solid contender.

3/1 chalk Sapphire Jubilee has the most consistent turf form. She’s a tough play for the top spot, though. Why? She goes first time for trainer Bernell Rhone, who is 0-for-21 first off the claim and must break from post-position 1 where she’ll get shuffled back. She figures to eat chalk dollars while coming along too late to finish no better than third.

  • Win: Scarlet Bow
  • Place: Elusive Ryder
  • Show: Sapphire Jubilee

Horse Racing Odds & Picks Race 8 – 4:00 pm ET – 1/ 16 Miles Turf – $75,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Man, there are some runners in the eighth at Tampa Bay on April 1. The best? That could be the Cristophe Clement trained Bitcoin Passion. American Pharoah’s daughter won at first asking going 1 1/16 miles over the Tampa turf back in January. Top TB Downs jockey Antonio Gallardo takes the call while Clement wins 42% at the meet. Wager with confidence.

There’s enough speed in this to flatter 2/1 chalk Our Country’s closing kick. George Weaver is one of the top turf trainers in the nation. He’ll ensure Our Country is ready to roll on Wednesday.

Eoin Harty puts the saddle on Tapage, a Godolphin owned, Tapit sired 3-year-old colt. Tapage hasn’t run since breaking it’s maiden at Gulfstream Park back in February. If this one runs to its breeding, it could beat Bitcoin Passage and Our Country. But, it’s hard to know if that’s going to happen. Best to use on the bottom of exotics.

  • Win: Bitcoin Passion
  • Place: Our Country
  • Show: Tapage
