Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Friday, April 10

Race 6 – 2:53 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf –$10,000 Claiming

None of the chalk horses look like locks in this low-level turf event. Why not take a shot with 20/1 on the morning line Autograph? Make no mistake. The 2 turf races have been awful. But, Victor Carrasco is a 25% winning trainer down 2 plus classes. Obviously, Victor feels this guy deserves another shot on the sod. We’re not arguing.

Dig In’s turf form isn’t great. But the Gerald Bennett 5-year-old trained horse has a decent 3 furlong work in its last and there isn’t a lot to like about the morning line favorites. Let’s go for the huge exacta by making this 8/1 Horse Racing Odds shot second.

On paper, Sky D looks like a winner. The gelding has the best turf form in the field, drops, and comes over from Gulfstream Park. But, new trainer Ian Hemingway is 0-for-10 with runners going first time for him. Also, the odds should dive crazy like from the 7/2 morning line.

  • Win: Autograph
  • Place: Dig In
  • Show: Sky D

Race 7 – 3:24 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Dirt –$12,500 Claiming

Risen Change tracked the speed about 2 lengths behind, took over around the stretch, and drew off for a 3 length win. It was her first time for trainer Tony Wilson. There’s a chance she improves second time for Wilson. If she does, she’ll make the 8/1 morning line odds look like a gift.

Lady Breanna runs for top Tampa trainer Gerald Bennett. Breanna takes a slight drop in class. She also returns to a sprint, has speed, and should get the perfect trip behind likely pace setter Tale of V K.

6/1 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds Mardi Gras Girl had no chance in her last after bumping at the break. That threw the early presser off her game. She made a 3-wide move at the quarter pole but threw in the towel. The Cajun Breeze 4-year-old filly deserves another chance. Consider Mardi Gras Girl for the top and bottom of your exotics.

  • Win: Risen Change
  • Place: Lady Breanna
  • Show: Mardi Gras Girl

Race 8 – 3:55 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$25,000 Claiming

Race 8 is Lion Charmer’s to lose. The 3/1 morning line choice must only deal with Minnesota Lucky to get the lead. That one breaks from post-position 10, which means jockey Angel Suarez can decide if he wants to lay back or force Lucky jockey Scott Spieth to gun it from the outside most post. Either way, Angel’s got the edge in this race.

Minnesota Lucky comes out of sprint races. If she were to the inside of Lion Charmer, she’d be the top pick. But she’s not. Before throwing her from the exacta, though, realize that she broke her maiden over the grass going 1 mile and 70 yards. The Tim Padilla trainee worked a great 4 furlongs in 47.4 on April 5.

Antonio Gallardo takes the call on High Heater. The 3-year-old colt takes a massive drop from optional claiming $40K to this straight $25K claimer. That alone makes him a contender. Trainer David Hinsley wins 2% at Tampa Bay, though. It’s best to relegate this dude to third.

  • Win: Lion Charmer
  • Place: Minnesota Lucky
  • Show: High Heater
