Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Saturday, April 11

Race 3 – 1:15 pm ET – 5 Furlongs Turf –$16,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Anthony Granitz trained Sunset Empire had a tight break, was inside, and then had to shift out and try to run on going 3-wide in her last. That’s too much to ask in a 5 furlong turf sprint. Now on the outside of rival Tracy Ann’s Legacy, Empire could turn the tables on the odds on chalk.

Speaking of the favorite, Tracy Ann’s Legacy easily handled her rivals in her last race while busting out with a huge speed rating. That’s the reason to back her. She looks like she should dominate. What are the reasons to relegate her to second? The last time she raced that well, she’s bounced in her next. Also, we’re dreaming if we think she holds her 7/5 Horse Racing Odds in this.

Pins and Needles forced the pace and then weekend in her last. Any improvement could get her into the exacta. But we might be asking too much that she beat both Tracy Ann’s Legacy and Sunset Empire.

  • Win: Sunset Empire
  • Place: Tracy Ann’s Legacy
  • Show: Pins and Needles

Race 6 – 2:45 pm ET – 1 Mile 40 Yards Dirt –$10,000 Claiming

Zitman should close and get its picture taken. The John Rigattieri trained gelded son of Big Brown has a 3-2-1 record from 9 races over the Tampa dirt. Rigattieri wins 30% with turf to dirt runners and there’s a ton of speed signed on.

At 6/1 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds, how do we disregard Ox Trot? The Michael Wright trainee has won 3-of-4. Sure, those races were at lower levels, but the speed ratings give this one a huge chance to get into the exacta/

Tim Padilla’s runners is 8/5 on the morning line. Last Promise has 5 wins and 2 thirds in the 6-year-old geldings last 7 races. Why drop? The Spring At Last sired runner has brought home paychecks on the regular since December. We can’t leave out of the trifecta but the suspicious drop makes us relegate to third.

  • Win: Zitman
  • Place: Ox Trot
  • Show: Last Promise

Race 7 – 3:15 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf –$25,000 Claiming

Trainer James DiVito claimed Gambler’s Fallacy from Chad Brown in a $25K claimer at Gulfstream Park. DiVito runs Gambler’s Fallacy in Race 7 at Tampa Bay on Saturday. That’s a 29% winning move. Even if this one’s morning line gets cut in half, it’s a good play for the victory.

Jockey Gary Wales sticks with Small Hope. The Kent Sweezy trained runner goes back to its favorite distance, 1 1/16 miles. It ran well enough in a 1 3/8 miles handicap over the lawn in it’s last to challenge for the win. Small Hope has a 1-4-1 record at the 1 1/16 distance, though, making this one a tough play for win honors.

On the Spree has 3 seconds and a win from 4 races over Tampa’s turf. The Speightsown runner should be in a good position throughout. But the 4-year-old appears to have trouble closing the deal. Also, there are some decent closers in this field.

  • Win: Gambler’s Fallacy
  • Place: Small Hope
  • Show: On the Spree
