Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Wednesday, April 15

Race 3 – 1:30 pm ET – 1 Mile 40 Yards Dirt – $6,250 Claiming

Jockey Angel Suarez took the lead with Blue Chicory out of the gate in the mare’s last and never looked back. Suarez was so confident he rushed Chicory 4-wide around the first turn to get the lead. Angel won’t have to employ those tactics on Wednesday. Blue Chicory breaks from post-position 1, which means Angel can allow her to settle on the lead. Suarez opens around the turn for a second straight score.

Morning line favorite Blazing Brooke keeps top jock Antonio Gallardo. The Kathleen O’Connell trained 4-year-old filly has a couple of wins, a second, and a fourth in her last 4. She deserves to be favored in this, but Gallardo must work to get her into position to overtake Blue Chicory as they turn for home. That could be tough.

Lady Love has 2 thirds from 3 races at this distance, including a third place finish at this level and distance on March 22. She stretches out from 7 furlongs and, again, should finish third.

  • Win: Blue Chicory
  • Place: Blazing Brooke
  • Show: Lady Love

Race 5 – 2:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt –$40,000 Maiden Claiming

Trainer Aldana Gonzalez has sneaky good stats with first time starters, which is why 8/1 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds Impressive Speed is the choice. Gonzalez wins 26% with maiden claiming runners, 17% with first-time starters no matter the level, and 20% with first-time maiden claiming runners. Impressive Speed has a nice, under the radar, work tab for the debut.

Federale looks like an easy winner for trainer Dale Bennett. The 9/5 morning line chalk drops from maiden special weight, gets blinkers, and has a nice work since finishing third in a much better race on March 14. There aren’t a lot of things to dislike. But the odds will go to nothing and this one is 0-for-5. Maybe, Federale just doesn’t care to win.

A few things point to Puerto Varas running well in this. The switch to Presque Isle Downs all-weather surface to dirt should help. Trainer Timothy Hamm drops and gelded after the last. The front runner could hang on for a piece.

  • Win: Impressive Speed
  • Place: Federale
  • Show: Puerto Varas

Race 7 – 3:30 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt –$16,000 Claiming

This a seriously competitive race, which means we can’t settle for a horse offering underlay odds. Absalom raced respectably for Darien Rodriguez in its last. The 4-year-old gelding battled on the turf at a mile. Absalom was in the top 3 as they turned for home, but faded to finish fourth. That was higher-level race. Rodriguez should have this one primed for the upset at 6/1.

Trainer Gerald Bennett wins at 21% because he places his horses in races where they can compete. Relishment keeps Sammy Camacho to pilot and shows up in a race the 4-year-old gelded son of Awesome Again can win. The 5/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds is also attractive.

Devil’s Rule figures to show a ton of speed. The Robert Dobbs trainee hasn’t raced since December and comes over from Hawthorne. The races at Indiana Downs were good enough to win on Wednesday, though. Will this one bust out a top race first off the bench? Probably not. Making third for that reason.

  • Win: Absalom
  • Place: Relishment
  • Show: Devil’s Rule
