At Saratoga Racecourse and Del Mar Racetrack, every weekend is big. On Friday, the Spa runs the Grade 3 Lake George. Then on Saturday, Saratoga runs it’s Grade 1 for the week, the Coaching Club American Oaks. Del Mar runs two graded stakes races, the Grade 2 Eddie Read and Grade 2 San Clement, on Saturday. Saratoga Racecourse – Friday, July 23

  • Grade 3 Lake George – 1 mile turf – $150,000

10 horses are likely to enter the starting gate for the Lake George on Friday. Among the ten, both Todd Pletcher and Graham Motion will saddle a runner. Chad Brown hopes to saddle four, including second-place Without Applause finisher Minaun. The favorite should be Runaway Rumour, which won the Without Applause in her last. 

Saratoga Racecourse – Saturday, July 24

  • Grade 3 Caress  – 5 ½ furlongs turf – $200,000

So far, just six horses are probable for the Grade 3 Caress. Brian Lynch saddles Toffen, Madeline Must runs from the Christophe Clement barn, Bruce Brown should enter Robin Sparkles, Mike Maker sends likely favorite Jakarta to the gate, and Claude McGaughey goes with Flower Pint while Elizabeth Merryman puts the saddle on Caravel.  

  • Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $500,000

Heading into the week, the Coaching Club American Oaks figures to attract at least 6 runners. Among those, Todd Pletcher trained Malathaat could go off at less than even money. Clairiere and Army Wife hope to turn the tables on the undefeated Kentucky Oaks winner.  

Del Mar Racetrack – Saturday, July 24

  • Grade 2 Eddie Read  – 1 1/8 miles turf – $250,000

Richard Mandella hopes an Eddie Read victory on Saturday puts United on the path to the Breeders’ Cup Turf. United may face five other horses, Red King, Independence Hall, Award Winner, Restrainedvengeance, and Count Again. 

  • Grade 2 San Clemente – 1 mile turf – $200,000 

Five horses are probable for the Grade 2 San Clemente. Tetragonal runs for Richard Baltas while Pizzaz goes for Richard Mandella. Leonard Powell saddles Nimbostratus and Paddy Gallagher puts the saddle on Jibber Jabber. The other likely contender is Going Global from the Phil D’Amato barn.  

Saratoga Racecourse – Sunday, July 25

  • Grade 3 Shuvee – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $200,000

7 of the most talented distaff runners in the nation will lineup to contest the 1 1/8 miles Shuvee on Sunday. Chad Brown trained Dunbar Road figures to go off the chalk. Water White, Royal Flag, and Point of Honor should also attract betting dollars. Event though it won’t be a big field, the Grade 3 Shuvee should be a fantastic race.
