Top Stakes to Bet On: Gulfstream Park to Santa Anita Park

A pair of Kentucky Oaks preps and a massive Kentucky Derby prep take place on Saturday. Over at Oaklawn Park, the Grade 3 Honeybee for 3-year-old fillies and the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes for 3-year-olds happen. When horse racing odds land, Reincarnate could end up the chalk to win the Rebel. Then at Santa Anita, 3-year-old fillies run in the Grade 2 Santa Ysabel Stakes. See below for horse racing lines and more info on the Honeybee, the Santa Ysabel, and the Rebel as well as info for two other stakes races happening on Saturday.

Top Stakes Races for the Week

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 25

Gulfstream Park

Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes
6 furlongs dirt – 4 year olds & up

At least seven runners will step onto the Gulfstream dirt to contend the Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes. No doubt, Lightening Larry will attract action. The Jorge Delgado trained runner won the Sunshine Sprint restricted stakes in the last.

Scaramouche, trained by Guadalupe Preciado, will attract a few a dollars because Paco Lopez rides. Candy Man Rocket comes from the Bill Mott barn, which in the minds of some horseplayers makes Rocket an automatic bet. Super Ocho, Doc Amsher, and Cajun’s Magic are also likely to enter the gate.

Oaklawn Park

Carousel Stakes
6 furlongs dirt – 4 year olds & up

Connections for only six runners have so far committed to the Carousel Stakes. Yuugiri, Pretty Birdie, Novel Squall, Hazy Command, American Lily, and Portilla.

Of the six, Yuugiri and Pretty Birdie should offer the lowest odds. Yuugiri hasn’t run since finishing thirteenth in the Kentucky Oaks. Pretty Birdie won the Poinsettia Stakes in the last.

Grade 3 Honeybee
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies

Kenny McPeek takes his time with young runners. So it makes sense that many horseplayers are going to jump all over Defining Purpose even though the filly finished third behind fellow Honeybee entrants Wet Paint and Taxed in the Martha Washington in the last.

Brad Cox trains Martha Washington winner Wet Paint. No doubt, Paint will push Defining Purpose for favoritism. Others expected to run include Take Charge Briana, Oliver Twist, Effortlesslyelegant, and Royal Spa.

Grade 2 Rebel Stakes
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds

Sham winner Reincarnate could transfer from Bob Baffert to Brad Cox before the Rebel Stakes. If that happens, Reincarnate would be Cox’s third entry into the race.

Cox also trains Verifying, a last out allowance winner, and Giant Mischief, which finished second in the Remington Springboard in the last. All three, Verifying, Giant Mischief, and Reincarnate, can win the Grade 2 Rebel.

Bourbon Bash, Confidence Game, Red Route One, Gun Pilot, Frosted Departure, and Event Detail, should also break from the gate. Among those equines, Confidence Game will attract the most action.

Santa Anita Park

Grade 3 Santa Ysabel
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies

Bob Baffert has yet to transfer Grade 3 Las Virgenes winner Faiza. If Faiza runs for Baffert, no doubt, she’ll go off the chalk. If she runs for a different trainer, she might still go off the favorite.

Second place Las Virgenes finisher Pride of the Nile and third place Las Virgenes finisher Justique will also attract action. Last out maiden winner Coffee in Bed goes for Richard Mandella, which means she is a contender.
