We will start with the least surprising of American League favorites, as the Yankees basically return the same team that made short work of the American League during the playoffs last season. They have arguably the best player in baseball in Aaron Judge, who is coming off of a historic season that saw him crush 62 home runs while knocking in 133. His 133 runs led the majors, along with his on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
It is unlikely that Judge would replicate such a historic season, but barring any sort of injury or serious regression, he is likely to win the MVP at the very least. The expectation should be roughly 50-115-110 while maintaining a sky high OBP as he is one of the most feared hitters in all of baseball.
The addition of Carlos Rodon only bolsters are rotation that already boasts arguably the best strike-out pitcher in the major leagues. Rodon is not expected to be ready for opening day but should return by the end of April. Gerrit Cole struck out 257 batters last season and while he would love to cut down on his home runs allowed, the fact that he plays in one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the majors will likely limit his ability to do so.

The odds have shifted in Cleveland’s favor after the Chicago White Sox opened as the favorite. Bettors likely prefer the Guardians’ younger rotation as the expectation is that Lance Lynn and Johnny Cueto are of the age where you will begin to see significant regression. Shane Beiber has already won one Cy Young award, and Triston McKenzie could possibly seek his first this season.
The lineup is a bit of a question mark, as Jose Ramirez is the only established commodity. The good news is that most of the unproven players that provided so much production last season are all under the age of 30. Second baseman Andres Gimenez is just 24 years old and looks to be a budding superstar, while Josh Naylor could be the same if he is able to improve his on-base percentage.

It is hard to imagine anyone else coming out of the AL West, but the Astros are far from a sure thing this season. While their free agency addition of Jose Abreu is considered a fantastic success, the loss of Yuli Gurriel and Justin Verlander present serious problems both in the lineup and on the mound. To compound the issue, Jose Altuve suffered a thumb injury during the World Baseball Classic, and Houston fans can only hope that it is fully healed when he returns in late May or June.
Altuve is not the only injury concern at the moment as both Michael Brantley and Lance McCullers are dinged up. Brantley was re-signed during the offseason as a nice insurance bat whose signing should be considered a victory. McCullers only pitched 47 innings last season and likely won’t be ready on opening day this season but should not be out for very long. He had a sparkling ERA in his small sample size last season but still walks way too many hitters. If he is able to get his command under control, he could move into elite status.
