Atheltics’ Are MLB Betting Favorites Over Mariners Tuesday

Written by on May 22, 2018

The Seattle Mariners haven’t missed a beat since learning that All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano was going to miss 80 games for a positive drug test. The Mariners bring a three-game winning streak into Tuesday night’s series opener in Oakland. The A’s are solid MLB betting favorites in the latest-starting game on the night’s schedule.

Season Series

The Mariners have won four of six meetings vs. the A’s this season, all played in Seattle. They last squared off to begin this month.

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Mariners are a season-high eight games over .500 and won the final three games of a home four-game series with Detroit over the weekend. Sunday’s 3-2 win in 11 innings was dramatic as Mitch Haniger kept Seattle alive with a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning and Jean Segura’s RBI single in the 11th gave the Mariners the win. They improved to 3-0 in extra-inning games this season. The M’s had been 0-17 when trailing after eight innings this season. Detroit’s Francisco Liriano had taken a no-hitter into the seventh. With Liriano at 102 pitches after eight, the Tigers went to closer Shane Greene. Dee Gordon led off the 11th inning with a single and stole second base, his 16th steal of the year, before motoring around to score the winning run on Segura’s single. Gordon got the start at second base in the game, and he’s likely to split time between second base and center field now that Robinson Cano is out for the foreseeable future. DH Nelson Cruz got the day off Sunday to rest soreness in his foot and elbow and is expected to return when the Mariners open against the Athletics on Tuesday. Seattle’s 27-19 record is the team’s high-water mark over .500 since they were 86-76 to end the 2016 season.

Who Will Kick Off for the Mariners?

Mike Leake (4-3, 6.00)) gets the start Tuesday. Leake is riding a two-game winning streak and has lasted five or more innings in each of his last four starts.  Leake allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings last Tuesday, striking out two and walking none in a no-decision against the Rangers. Leake made it through five innings with just three runs allowed, but he ran into trouble in the sixth. After retiring Nomar Mazara to lead off the inning, he gave up four straight hits — a home run, two doubles and a single — before getting pulled. Leake has a 34:16 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 51 innings this season. The 30-year-old has thrown three quality starts, but his .301 batting average against and 1.53 WHIP make him hard to trust. Leake took a no-decision vs. the A’s on April 13, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings.

Why Bet on Oakland?

Are the A's a safe bet in the MLB odds for Tuesday? At 25-22, the A’s continue to surprise and they enter having won four straight and six of seven. They swept four games over the weekend at a solid Blue Jays squad. It was Oakland’s first four-game sweep of any team since September 2016 at Kansas City. It was Oakland’s first four-game sweep at Toronto in 18 tries. Oakland went 7-3 on a trip to the New York Yankees, Boston, and Toronto, homering in every game. The A’s are 12-4 against the AL East. It was Oakland’s first seven-win trip since April 2014, when the A’s swept Minnesota and went 2-1 against the Mariners and Angels. The A’s have a major-league-high 47 road homers. They’ve hit 14 at home, fewest in the majors. The A’s, though, are expected to place slugging DH Khris Davis on the DL before this game. Davis left Sunday’s game with a right groin strain. He was scheduled to be reevaluated Monday, but Manager Bob Melvin said that he “can’t imagine” he won’t end up on the disabled list based on how he was moving around. Mark Canha and Chad Pinder figure to see an uptick in playing time while Davis is sidelined. After going 0-for-2 on Sunday, Davis is hitting .235 with an .804 OPS and 13 home runs in 2018. He has hit more homers than any player in the majors since the start of the 2016 season.

Who Will Take the Mound  for the A’s on Tuesday?

It’s Trevor Cahill for Oakland. After striking out 12 Orioles in six shutout innings on May 5, Cahill allowed three runs over five innings with just one strikeout against Boston. Back from the disabled list after missing one start due to a right elbow impingement, Cahill threw 53 of his 88 pitches for strikes but was done in by a three-run first inning that featured a two-run homer off the bat of J.D. Martinez. Cahill rebounded to complete five innings, retiring each of his final nine batters, but the A’s were unable to pull ahead in that time. He fell to 1-2 through his first five starts despite a 2.79 ERA and a 32-to-7 K/BB ratio over 29 innings. Cahill is 5-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 13 career starts against Seattle. That includes 1-2 with a 1.82 ERA in five starts in the Coliseum. Cahill had a no decision in his only start last year vs. Seattle, a 6-4 Royals win at Kansas City on Aug. 3 (4.2 ip, 6 h, 2 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 3 so, 2 hr, 3.86 ERA). Cahill was signed by the A’s as a free agent March 19.
