Baseball fans tend to be split into two pretty distinct groups: there are those that love the low-scoring pitching duels, while the rest favor the long ball and high-scoring affairs. Fans of the latter are probably getting a real kick out of what is going on in the AL East this season. The Toronto Blue Jays are the offensive stars of the show there, but they are defensively pretty awful. The Jays, -131 favorites on MLB lines, are hosting the Boston Red Sox for a 3-game series, with the second game set for Saturday afternoon.

The flipside of that, though, is that they have a starting rotation that seems incapable of making it beyond the 6th inning, and a bullpen that cannot hold on to a lead. This is why the staggering 155 runs that the Jays have scored to this point in the season is somewhat tempered by the 146 runs they have surrendered. It also explains why they don’t have a record that matches their power output. The Jays will be looking for a solid start out of Drew Hutchison (2-0, 7.47 ERA) on Saturday afternoon. Hutchison has been hit pretty hard all season, but has somehow managed to avoid taking the Loss so far.One of the more mysterious teams heading onto this season was the Boston Red Sox (13-15). For every person that thought they would end up in the basement again, there was another who believed they could land atop the AL East. The Red Sox started the season well enough, and actually flirted with that top spot before cooling off considerably. They have had some injury issues to deal with, particularly in the catcher position, and have been making altogether too many defensive errors over the last couple of weeks. This is a team that has power in their line-up, though, so it’s not totally out of the question that they will be able to find their way back. Joe Kelly (1-1, 5.72 ERA) will try to help Boston get the win on Saturday. Kelly took his first loss of the season on his last outing, where he was hit pretty hard by the Yankees.

Boston went 3-6 on their recent home stand, and may be glad to get back on the road. Two of the wins in that stretch came against these Toronto Blue Jays, but a sweep at the hands of the Yankees and losing 2 of 3 to the Rays killed that momentum. I like the Toronto bats to stay hot enough to get them the win in this one.
