Atlanta’s best player, outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (knee) is scheduled to begin his minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. When Acuna returns, and a target date is May 6, Marcell Ozuna is expected to move to DH and Eddie Rosario to left field, with the team hoping Rosario gets going soon as he’s in a major slump. Ozuna started the first eight games in left field and was -1 in DRS That was tied with six others for third-worst DRS in the majors at the position.

Since 2018, the Braves have hit 34 leadoff home runs, the third most in baseball over that span – much of that from Acuna. Only Los Angeles-NL (39) and Houston (35) have hit more Acuna has the second most leadoff home runs over this stretch, hitting 23. Only Toronto’s George Springer has more with 26. It’s lefty Clayton Kershaw on the mound. Last Wednesday at the Twins, Kershaw was pulled with only six outs remaining in what was trending toward the first perfect game of his illustrious career. He had thrown 80 pitches with 13 strikeouts by the time he made quick work of the Twins in the bottom of the seventh. Many around MLB couldn’t believe that Roberts pulled him but Kershaw was making his season debut after an abbreviated spring training, on the heels of a winter when he didn’t pick up a baseball until January and following a season that saw him miss October because of an elbow injury.

“That’s a really difficult position to be in, on both sides,” Kershaw said. “At the end of the day, the only thing I feel bad for is, if I was a fan, I would want to see somebody finish the game. So, from a fan’s perspective, I do feel bad for that. I wish I could have done it. But it wasn’t the day.”

Kershaw recorded 11 of his 13 strikeouts vs. the Twins with the slider, the most with the pitch in any start of his career. The 17 whiffs on the slider were the third-most in a start in his career.

Kershaw face the Braves for the 13th time in his career and he is 5-1 with a 2.20 ERA (20 ER/81.2 IP) and 91 strikeouts against 20 walks. He suffered his first career loss to the Braves last season, allowing five runs in 6.0 innings.
