It’s two marquee franchises with very different agendas squaring off early this week when the NL East-leading Braves and AL East last-place Red Sox meet in Boston. Of course, the Braves were formerly located in Boston. Here’s a look at Tuesday’s Game 2 of the series.

Why Bet on Atlanta?

Atlanta avoided a sweep in Philadelphia with Sunday’s 12-10 shootout win.

There’s a decent chance the Braves make a big trade by Monday’s trade deadline as they are talking with the Cleveland Indians about excellent pitcher Mike Clevinger. The Atlanta rotation has been an issue for much of the season, especially after losing ace Mike Soroka to a torn Achilles. Cleveland has asked for outfielder Drew Waters. He is widely considered a top 50 prospect in baseball. Last year in Double-A and Triple-A, Waters hit .309/.360/.481 with 35 doubles, nine triples, five homers and 13 steals in 134 games.

The Braves have used 11 starting pitchers this season, which is tied for the most in the major leagues. Boston, Miami and Tampa Bay have also used 11. Braves starting pitchers are 6-10 this season with a 5.16 ERA. LHP Max Fried is 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA (6 ER/40.0 IP). The other nine starters are 1-10 with a 6.75 ERA.

Star outfielder Ronald Acuna was removed from Sunday night’s game against the Phillies due to right hamstring tightness. Atlanta was up 10-0 when Acuna exited before the bottom of the second inning, and his removal is being called “precautionary” so barring a setback he could be back in there as early as Monday. Second baseman Ozzie Albies remains on the injured list with a wrist injury and won’t be back before this weekend.

It’s Ian Anderson on the mound Tuesday. He’s one of the top pitching prospects in the majors and last Wednesday in his MLB debut, Anderson carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished having allowed just one run on one hit and two walks in the Braves’ 5-1 win over the Yankees.

Anderson had not allowed a hit until Luke Voit smacked an opposite-field home run with one out in the sixth inning. It was the only base knock he permitted on the day, as he walked two batters and fanned six. Anderson got 12 swinging strikes, with eight of those coming on his changeup.

YES Network analyst John Flaherty gave the rookie credit for his pitch selection.

“The kid who grew up about 170 miles from New York has flustered the Yankees with his three-pitch mix — fastball, curveball, changeup,” Flaherty said. “From the beginning, his body language on the mound was, ‘I’m coming after you, I’m going to attack you,’ and that’s what he’s done.”

On his way to playing for the Atlanta Braves, Anderson made stops with the Gulf Coast League Braves (Rookie); Danville Braves (Rookie); Rome Braves (A), Florida Fire Frogs (High-A); Mississippi Braves (AA); Gwinnett Stripers (AAA). Anderson was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Red Sox slugger JD Martinez was removed from Sunday’s game against the Nationals due to an apparent wrist injury. Martinez took a Daniel Hudson pitch off the wrist in the bottom of the eighth inning and was promptly replaced by Tzu-Wei Lin. X-rays turned up negative on Martinez’s wrist, and he’s day-to-day. Martinez is struggling this year, batting just .208 with three homers.

Rafael Devers went 4-for-4 and blasted a pair of home runs on Sunday in a 9-5 win over the Nationals. Devers crushed a two-run shot off of Nationals’ starter Austin Voth in the second inning to extend the Red Sox’ early advantage to 5-0. He then capped off the scoring in the contest with a solo shot off of Daniel Hudson to lead off the eighth inning. Devers’ bat has finally shown signs of life in recent weeks. He’s now slashing .240/.290/457 with six homers and 19 RBI. Over his last 11 games, he’s hitting .340 (16-for-47) with four homers and 14 RBI.

The Sox are 1-12 against the Yankees and Rays this season and 11-10 against all other teams (3-4 vs. BAL, 3-2 vs. TOR, 2-2 vs. NYM, 1-1 vs. PHI, 2-1 vs. WSH). The Sox are 15-14 against NL teams since the start of 2019, after going 27-5 in their previous 32 Interleague games. They are 6-4 vs. the NL this season.

Boston remains without starting outfielder Andrew Benintendi due to a ribs injury and he’s not close to returning. Benintendi has already missed over two weeks of action. He was having an awful season.

It’s not clear yet who Boston will start on the mound here – could be a bullpen-type game. Their rotation has been devastated by injuries with Nathan Eovaldi the latest to land on the injured list over the weekend. To fill Eovaldi’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza from the Alternate Training Site.
