Monday is the Memorial Day holiday in the United States and one of the big baseball days of the year. The marquee matchup on Monday is clearly Cardinals at Dodgers and a matchup of two of the NL’s best pitchers and Cy Young contenders in Jack Flaherty and Trevor Bauer. The Dodgers are favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on St. Louis?

The Cards placed reliever Kodi Whitley on the 10-day injured list with mild back spasms and the move is retroactive to May 27.  To take his roster spot, the team recalled RHP Seth Elledge from Triple-A Memphis. Elledge holds a 7.71 ERA this season with a 2.36 WHIP over 4 2/3 innings at the major league level but has tossed 3 2/3 scoreless frames for Triple-A Memphis with seven strikeouts.

Shortstop Paul De Jong and center fielder Harrison Bader are also both on the injured list. Bader landed on the 10-day injured list last Tuesday after suffering a hairline fracture in the right part of his rib cage when he slid on top of a ball while trying to make a diving catch in the outfield the night before at the White Sox. Edmundo Sosa has played well as DeJong’s fill-in, so the Cards figure to proceed cautiously with DeJong but he appears close.

It’s ace Jack Flaherty (8-1) on the mound for the Cardinals. Flaherty was charged with a season-high seven runs (three earned) over 3 2/3 innings last Tuesday in a loss to the White Sox. Flaherty squared off against his former high school teammate, Lucas Giolito, for the first time in the major leagues on Tuesday evening, but it wound up being a forgettable performance. He gave up six hits, including a two-run homer to José Abreu, and walked a pair of batters.

He was also victimized by a pair of fielding errors in the opening frame, which allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate. The 25-year-old righty has 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 58/19 K/BB ratio across 57 innings (10 starts).

Flaherty makes his 5th career start vs. the Dodgers; he’s from the Los Angeles area and has never allowed more than one run in a start against his hometown team. His first start at Dodger Stadium came on 8/22/18 and he carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning before Joc Pederson broke it up with a solo homer. Flaherty blanked the Dodgers for 7.0 innings on 8/7/19 at Dodger Stadium, striking out 10, but took a no-decision as LA rallied or two runs in the 9th to walk-off with 2-1 win.

He has the lowest opponents’ batting average (.141), ERA (1.08), WHIP (0.68) & K/BB ratio (7.20) of any pitcher with 4 or more starts vs. the Dodgers since the start of 2018.

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?

Star outfielder Mookie Betts didn’t play Sunday due to allergies, according to manager Dave Roberts.  According to Roberts, Betts experienced an allergic reaction and had trouble keeping his eyes open. So that’s worth monitoring for this game. Third baseman Justin Turner also was out of the lineup Sunday simply for rest and should be back Monday. Turner is having one of his typically productive seasons as one of the most underrated players in the game, batting .273/.360/.470 with nine home runs, nine doubles, 28 RBI, and 32 runs scored.

L.A. did activate former NL MVP Cody Bellinger from the injured list over the weekend, however. Bellinger wound up missing nearly two months due to a hairline fracture in his left fibula.

It’s reigning NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer (5-3) on the mound. Bauer allowed two runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts over six innings in a loss against the Astros last Wednesday. Bauer labored through the first inning, giving up a leadoff home run to Jose Altuve in the first inning. Bauer would then walk three batters to load the bases before getting Taylor Jones to strike out swinging. He’s gave up one more run on a solo shot by Carlos Correa in the sixth. The 30-year-old right-hander induced just 10 swing-and-misses for three strikeouts, his lowest total of the season. Bauer has a 2.07 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 91 strikeouts over 69 2/3 innings.

Bauer has pitched at least six innings in 10 of his 11 starts and has also allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 straight starts. He has faced the Cards just twice in his career, in 2015 with the Guardians and in 2019 with the Reds. Bauer has gone 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA (7 ER/11.1 IP)
