The 24-year-old took take the place of Miles Mikolas on the Cardinals roster, who was just placed on the injured list with forearm tightness. Fernandez has a career 9.19 ERA over 15 2/3 frames in the majors but does carry a 3.56 ERA over 399 innings in the minors. The right-hander had thrown 5 1/3 innings with Triple-A Memphis so far this season and has allowed two runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts.

It’s expected to be Kwang Hyun Kim (2-3) on the mound here. He gave up four runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres last Sunday. Kim held the Padres scoreless through three innings before everything fell part in the fourth. It all started on a throwing error by Nolan Arenado, but Kim walked three in the inning, including two with the bases loaded before being pulled. Coming into the night, Kim had walked just five batters through 23 innings.

The Cardinals had won each of their prior seven games started by Kim, before the defeat. It was first St. Louis in a game started by Kim since 9/14/20 at Milwaukee. Kim will be making his first career appearance against the White Sox and first career appearance against an American League foe, with each of his first 14 career appearances having come against the National League.

Kim pitch in the Windy City once last season, taking a ND in Cardinals’ 3-1 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field on 8/17/20 when he logged 3.1 IP, allowing one run.

The White Sox lead the AL Central at 26-19 but were swept three games over the weekend at the Yankees. Closer Liam Hendriks issued a bases-loaded walk to the lone batter he faced on Sunday in a relief appearance against the Yankees. Hendriks was called upon in the bottom of the ninth inning to attempt to send the contest to extra innings after lefty Aaron Bummer loaded the bases and recorded only one out. He wound up handing out a free pass to Aaron Judge, resulting in a walk-off victory for the Yankees.

One bright spot in the loss was rookie Andrew Vaughn smashing a pinch-hit, game-tying solo homer in the ninth inning. Vaughn came off the bench to snap Aroldis Chapman’s 18-inning scoreless streak with an opposite-field shot into right-center field — his third homer of the season.

The Pale Hose are missing three injured outfielders currently. One is getting close, though, as Adam Engel (hamstring) will join Triple-A Charlotte on Monday to begin a rehab assignment. Engel has reached the final stage of his rehab from the Grade 2 hamstring strain he sustained late in spring training. Chicago initially planned to have Engel work as a fourth or fifth outfielder this season, but he may be thrust into a more prominent role than anticipated after Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) and Luis Robert (hip) suffered injuries that will sideline them until after the All-Star break.

It’s former Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn (4-1) on the mound here. Lynn held the Twins to two runs off five hits over six innings in a loss for the White Sox on Tuesday. Twins first baseman Miguel Sanó gave the 34-year-old Lynn a repeat visit with home runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but Lynn was otherwise locked in across the 109-pitch performance.

Lynn has thrown at least five innings in all of his starts since coming off the injured list on May 1 and had also picked up a win in each of those outings before taking a no-decision on Tuesday. Lynn is 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA (5 ER/21.0 IP), 19 strikeouts and a .154 (12-78) opponents average in his last four starts.

Lynn was drafted by the Cardinals in 2008 and spent six seasons in St. Louis. He will make just his second career start against St. Louis. He suffered the loss in his only start on 5/16/18 (3 ER/3.0 IP). In his Cardinals career from 2011-17, Lynn was 72-47 with a 3.38 ERA (367 ER/977.2 IP) and 919 strikeouts in 183 games (161 starts).
