White Sox go all in with Liam Hendriks

The Chicago White Sox landed the biggest fish of this Major League Baseball offseason when signing Liam Hendriks to a $54 million contract.

The 31-year-old Hendriks will pocket $39 million in his first three years. The buyout and White Sox option for a fourth-year are at $15 million. Liam Hendriks isn’t a starter, which begs the question why the White Sox would pay him so much money.

Ah, but Chicago already has a nice rotation. Last season, Lucas Giolito posted a 3.48 ERA, Lance Lynn, whom the White Sox acquired earlier this offseason, had a 3.32 ERA. Dallas Kuechel posted a 1.99 ERA in 2020.

Hendriks is one of the best closers in baseball. He’s one of the reasons the Oakland Athletics won the AFC West in the 60-game shortened 2020 season. In 2019, Liam posted a 1.80 ERA. Last season, his ERA was a fantastic 1.78.

He struck out 124 batters in 2019 and 37 last season. Hendriks increases Chicago’s chances of winning the World Series, which is why the White Sox are now at +1000 on MyBookie.

Lindor heads to New York to play for the Mets

The New York Mets also offer +1000 odds to win the Fall Classic. New York landed Francisco Lindor via trade with the Texas Rangers. Lindor immediately becomes the Mets biggest and only superstar.

Although Francisco is under contract for a single year, he did say that he’d be willing to sign a longer-term deal with NYM. The Mets certainly didn’t acquire Lindor to have him bounce after a single season.

How much will Lindor help the 2021 Mets? The shortstop has a lifetime .285 batting average. His .833 career OPS is fantastic while he’s never made more than 14 errors in a single season since 2015. In 2020, Francisco made a single error in 58 games.

The Mets’ rotation is also a reason for enthusiasm. Jacob DeGrom remains one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. Marcus Stroman’s 3.77 ERA and Carlos Carrasco’s 2.91 give NYM a shot versus Atlanta, San Diego, and the Dodgers in the deep National League.

Springer, Realmuto, LeMahieu and Bauer remain unsigned

The top four free agents on the board remain without contracts. George Springer, J.T. Realmuto, D.J. LeMahieu and Trevor Bauer have no idea where they’re playing this season.

Of the four, the most interesting has become LeMahieu. The Yankees and LeMahieu’s reps are in a stare down war of wills. Most consider D.J. the best second baseman in baseball. Losing LeMahieu could be a giant blow to NYY’s chances of winning the World Series.

The two sides should figure it out. If they don’t, the free agent will have plenty of suitors. Time hasn’t run out just yet but if like Aaron Boone said the Yankees want LeMahieu to remain in pinstripes for a long time, NYY had better pick up the pace in talks with their star second baseman.
