If Ohtani is really this good, the Angels could end their playoff drought

MyBookie odds on the Los Angeles Angels make them an underdog to win the World Series. But if their most exciting player, two-way star Shohei Ohtani, keeps this up the Halos are an overlay at +4000.

In 19 at-bats during spring training, Ohtani has 11 hits and 4 home runs. He’s scored 8 runs. He’s knocked in 8 runs. His OPS (on-base plus slugging) is a ridiculous 1.782. Ohtani’s batting average is .579.

Shohei is also a pitcher. In his first outing as a starter, Ohtani impressed. He threw 41 pitches, Angels’ manager Joe Maddon had him on a pitch count, and displayed an over 95-mph fastball and a ridiculous splitter.

The two-way player walked two and gave up 3 extra base hits. But Maddon was happy with Ohtani’s performance.  The Angels’ manager was in the dugout in 2016 when the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908.

Maddon believes that if Shohei becomes more consistent with his delivery and starts placing his fastball better, he will “take off.” Any pitching Maddon can get from Ohtani is icing on the cake.

Shohei’s ability at the plate makes him the Angels’ designated hitter. If Ohtani can become an ace pitcher, the Halos will have a chance to win the AL West.

If Dylan Bundy and Andrew Heaney come through on the mound, Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon will ensure the Angels score runs. Also, the A’s, Astros, Mariners, and Rangers won’t scare anyone this season.

Philadelphia Phillies’ bullpen could make them an overlay at +3500

Philadelphia’s bullpen has played great during spring training. If the bullpen continues the same path in the regular season, baseball handicappers must throw the Phillies’ hat into the crowded NL East ring.

Atlanta, no doubt, is the chalk to take the division. The New York Mets are one of the favorites to win the World Series and although the odds make them an overlay, the Washington Nationals are also a contender.

Philadelphia closer Archie Bradley, and relievers Brandon Kintzler and Tony Watson, are proving they can step in and perform if any of Philadelphia’s starters get into trouble.

The starting rotation isn’t bad. Both Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler can contain batting lineups when they’re throwing their best stuff.

The batting lineup is solid. Bounce back seasons from Bryce Harper and Andrew McCutchen would help. If those two play close to their former MVP forms, and Didi Gregorious and J.T. Realmuto stay healthy, the Phillies will be one of the top scoring teams in MLB.

Dodgers and Yankees remain underlays to win the World Series

As we head into the final two spring training weeks, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees remain solid favorites. The Dodgers are at +350 and the Yankees offer +550 odds.

Both teams are plays against to win the World Series. Don’t get us wrong, both can win the title, but the odds don’t justify a bet. Not when squads like the Phillies and Angels offer odds at over +3000.

A good strategy could be to pick a favorite, either the Dodgers, Padres, Yankees, Braves, or White Sox, and then choose an underdog. If your overlay team is out of it before the MLB All-Star Game, you can turn your attention to your chalk team.
