Nationals may not recover this season after having to delay games due to COVID positives

Due to a positive COVID test, the Washington Nationals had to postpone their first 5 games. When the Nats finally got to step onto the diamond, they had to battle the Atlanta Braves.

Although Washington won the first game in the series versus the ATL, they lost the the next two. Then came the series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers swept the Nationals. D.C. won their next game 5-2 versus the Cardinals but heading into their April 14 match with St. Louis, the Nationals are 2-5 and at the bottom of the NL East.

Those who feel the cup is half full will say it’s early in the season and Washington has talent.  But outside of Juan Soto, the Nats’ offense has been just okay. More importantly, the team must make up the 5 missed games at some point this.

It also doesn’t help that the Phillies are 6-3 after the first two weeks. We know Atlanta and the Mets will get it together. If Philadelphia continues playing well, that’s three teams in the East who Washington will have to beat for a playoff spot.

Cubs fearful of COVID outbreak after 4 go on IL

Fearing a COVID outbreak, the Chicago Cubs have placed infielder Matt Duffy and relivers Brandon Workman, Dan Winkler, and Jason Adam on the injured list.

Manager Dave Ross said, “If you have a headache, if you have a runny nose, if you have body aches, if you have just about anything going on that would or could be one of the COVID symptoms, we’re going to err on the side of caution.”

Luckily for the Cubs, none of their top players have gotten a cough, or runny nose, or any body aches. First base coach Craig Driver tested positive for COVID. So did bullpen coach Chris Young.

Although Workman, Winkler, Adam and Duffy tested negative, the Cubs aren’t taking any chances. If a COVID outbreak happens, Chicago could miss way more than the 5 games the Nationals had to postpone.

Padres looking like legit World Series contenders

The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers look like the top contenders to win the World Series. Although the Dodgers are at a lower price, the Padres may be in a better position.

As of April 12, San Diego leads Major League Baseball in team ERA. Yu Darvish and Blake Snell are locking down lineups. Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter in franchise history.

If San Diego’s rotation continues to pitch lights out, the Padres should overtake the Dodgers and win the NL West. The Padres rank seventh in team batting average. They could rise to the top five.

Should San Diego’s offense catch up with the starting rotation, the Padres would become the team to beat for rings. Consider San Diego the early season favorite even though their odds don’t reflect it.
