Big free agents could be on the move
Pitchers Charlie Morton, Darren O’Day, Corey Kluber, and Adam Wainwright could be on the move. Of the four pitchers mentioned, where Morton lands is the biggest deal.
The Tampa Bay Rays decided not to pick up the $15 million option on Charlie Morton. Lest we forgot, Morton threw a game in the World Series and is pretty much the reason the Rays beat the Astros to make it to the Fall Classic.
He’ll find a home, no doubt. Lots of teams will be interested in Charlie, including the Detroit Tigers who hired A.J. Hinch to manage their squad. Charlie Morton threw for Hinch when they were both with the Astros. Another interesting landing place could be with the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves won’t resign Darren O’Day. They’ve got three strong, young, starters in Max Fried, Mike Soroka, and Ian Anderson. Adding Morton to the rotation could help the Braves challenge the Dodgers in the NL.
Alex Cora heads back to Bean Town
The Boston Red Sox waited out Alex Cora’s one-year suspension. Some though Cora might never step foot in Boston again, but the Red Sox, realizing that he’s one of the best managers the franchise has ever had, resigned Cora to lead the team into 2021.
Cora made the decisions when the Red Sox beat the L.A. Dodgers and won the 2018 World Series. He knows what he’s doing. This Red Sox squad doesn’t resemble the one Alex took to the Fall Classic in 2018, but it may not matter.
Managers like Cora find ways to put together competitive teams. Don’t be surprised if Boston bounces back from a dreadful 2020 with a real nice season.
Toronto signs Robbie Ray, proving 2020 wasn’t a one-off season
The Toronto Blue Jays signed 29-year-old Robbie Ray to an extension. Even though Ray had a tough time this season, he had a 2-5 record and 6.62 ERA, the signing shows that Toronto wants to win in 2021.
Few pitchers can throw heat like Ray. Also, Ray threw for the Blue Jays in the playoffs and he threw well, tossing 3.1 innings and giving up an earned run off a single hit while striking out five.
Not only that, but Robbie will be the fourth pitcher in the rotation. With a full 162 games, Ray could rediscover his best stuff. If he does, the Blue Jays might have a rotation that challenges the Yankees in the AL East.
Dodgers remain favorites but some teams ready to improve
The Dodgers remain the heavy favorites but that’s before free agency. If you like Atlanta, Toronto, or even Boston, make sure to consider backing one of those of teams before free agency happens.
If Atlanta signs Charlie Morton, their starting rotation becomes one of the best in MLB. So, make sure to back the ATL soon if you already believe in them.
Have a great week!
