Yankees show 9 COVID positives, Cole breaks record for most strikeouts

Over the weekend, the Yankees came up with 9 positive COVID-19 tests, including starting shortstop Gleyber Torres. But in a sign of how far we’ve come dealing with the pandemic, MLB cleared Torres to play on May 19.

In other great news for the Yankees, second-baseman Rougned Odor went back to the field on Tuesday. Odor, who had been out due to an injury, had 2 hits in a 7-4 Yankees’ road win against the Texas Rangers.

The coronavirus positive overhang didn’t affect Gerrit Cole. NYY’s ace broke a record Milwaukee Brewers’ star Corbin Burnes had set earlier in the season.

Burnes had struck out 58 batters before yielding a walk. Cole is up to 61 strikeouts without a walk. Overall, New York’s top starter has struck out 85 batters in 57.2 innings.

Braves’ Ynoa out after breaking hand, Mets’ Pillar suffers nasal fractures

The Atlanta Braves are in a dogfight with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies for first-place in the NL East. Losing one of their best pitchers won’t help matters.

This past Sunday, twenty-two-year-old right-hander Huascar Ynoa landed on the injured list after punching a bench in the dugout following a tough start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Ynoa broke his right-hand. He should be out a couple of months.

The starter was 4-2 with a 4.50 ERA. Losing Ynoa could turn into a big problem.

The Mets also suffered a major loss. Atlanta Braves reliever Jacob Webb threw a fastball that struck Kevin Pillar’s face. Pillar suffered multiple nasal fractures.

The Mets placed Pillar on the 10-day disabled list. The outfielder said he feels normal except for some swelling around his eyes.

Dodgers sign Albert Pujols, LAD odds drop to +300

Angels’ manager Joe Maddon cut Albert Pujols. The future hall-of-fame player wasted no time signing with the defending World Series Champion Dodgers.

Now forty-one-years-old, at one time, Pujols was the most feared hitter in the league. This season, he’s batting .194.

Pujols is a .298 lifetime hitter with 3,254 hits and 667 home runs. The Dodgers are loaded. All LAD needs from Pujols is a few key playoff hits to justify the signing.

Albert knows where he’s at in his career. He expects nothing from Los Angeles and just wants to help where he can.

The signing is so positive that the Dodgers’ odds to win the World Series went from +325 to +300 this past week. LAD remains 2 games behind the rival San Francisco Giants in the competitive NL West.
