70% of players and on-field staff have begun vaccinations

Per Major League Baseball commissioner Roger Manfred, 70% of players, on-field staff, and other personnel have at least begun vaccinations. Those who have gotten full vaccinations as well as those who have gotten the first of a two-stage vaccination are part of the 70%.

Manfred said, “I think we’re around 70%. The clubs have worked really hard with their players. We’re continuing to press to try to get everybody up above that kind of 85 number that we think is so important.”

By 85, Manfred meant 85%. The commissioner made his announcement in an April 27 discussion with SporticoLive.

White Sox put Luis Robert on IL, Cardinals send Molina to injured list

Although Manfred was bullish on MLB’s ability to get as many players and personnel vaccinated as possible, the Chicago White Sox had to put Luis Robert on the injured list due to “flu-like” symptoms.

That doesn’t mean Robert has COVID. It does mean, his symptoms resemble the coronavirus. In any case, Robert will have to wait to be cleared to return to the field.

The St. Louis Cardinals sent arguably their best player to IL. Catcher Yadier Molina is on the 10-day injured list due a tendon strain in his right foot. For years, Molina has been one of the Cards’ most consistent and best players. Losing Molina will sting.

George Springer makes Blue Jays debut

George Springer, one of the top free agents this past offseason, will finally get onto the field. Springer makes his Toronto Blue Jays debut on Wednesday versus the Washington Nationals in a game that starts at 7:07 pm ET.

The former Houston Astros will be the Jays’ designated hitter. Eventually, the Blue Jays want Springer’s golden glove somewhere on the field. But for now, he’ll hit DH.

What sort of impact will Springer have? He’s a lifetime .270 batter who has hit 174 home runs and has driven in 458 runs. His OBP is .361. So, yes, he’ll make a decent impact.

Dodgers and Giants tied for first place in the NL West

As of April 27, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants have the same 15-9 record. The Dodgers are the chalk to win the World Series. The Giants are an underdog.

Granted, things can change a ton after the first month of play. But the Giants look like a team with legs. Kevin Gausman has a 2.14 ERA. The Giants’ starting rotation ranks second in team ERA and first in team WHIP.

A resurgent Buster Posey is batting .351 and has hit 5 home runs. San Francisco has climbed to twentieth in runs per game. Right now, the Giants, not the Padres, look like the Dodgers top competition in the NL West.
