Why Bet on Arizona?

Colorado was swept by Arizona the last time the two clubs met, July 5-7 in Phoenix, the final series of the first half. When the two clubs last met in Denver May 27-30, the Rockies swept Arizona in four games, Colorado’s second four-game sweep of Arizona in franchise history (Sept. 18-21, 2014). Also prior to July’s series in Phoenix, the Rockies had won a club-record eight consecutive games vs. Arizona since May 5 (won seven straight in 2004, July 23-Sept. 13), the longest winning streak by either team in the series. Colorado had not lost to the D-backs since May 4 and had not lost at Chase Field since July 22, 2018.

The Diamondbacks have called up infielder/outfielder Josh Rojas from Triple-A Reno. Rojas was one of four players acquired from the Astros in the Zack Greinke trade on July 31. He has enjoyed a breakout season this year in the minors at age 25, slashing .332/.418/.606 with 23 home runs, 83 RBI, 33 stolen bases, and 89 runs scored in 105 total games between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. Rojas debuted on Monday in left field. He became the 10th Arizona-born player to play for the D-backs in the team’s history.

To make room on the roster, the team designated catcher Blake Swihart for assignment. Swihart was batting just .136/.186/.273 in 31 games with the Diamondbacks, who acquired him from the Red Sox in mid-April.

It’s young Zac Gallen (2-3) for the Rockies. Gallen (2-3) earned the win Wednesday after holding the Phillies scoreless over five innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out six. Making his first start for the Diamondbacks, Gallen turned in a solid performance, retiring the first six batters and holding the Phillies to one single. The right-hander, who made his big-league debut June 20, was traded from the Marlins at the deadline. Through eight appearances, Gallen owns a 2.40 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 49:21 K:BB.

Why Bet on Colorado?

The Rockies were a season-high six games over .500 after sweeping a three-game series at Arizona June 18-20. Colorado is 13-31 since June 21 (entering Monday). The .295 winning percentage over that span is the lowest in the National League, second-lowest in MLB (Detroit, .200, 9-36).

Charlie Blackmon has batted .344 (21-for-61) his past 15 games on the road, hitting safely in 12 with multiple hits in six and three hits in three. Trevor Story has hit safely in 21 of his past 25 road games (.284, 29-for-102). Daniel Murphy’s .317 average since June 23 ranks eighth in the NL over that span. That stretch includes a .314 (32-for-102) batting average since the All-Star break.

Diamondbacks vs Rockies should be a close victory for Colorado

Scott Oberg ranks fifth among NL relievers with a 2.17 ERA (43.0 IP, 13 ER). Since being reinstated from the 10-day injured list on June 27, 2018, posted a 12-2 record and 1.99 ERA (95.0 IP, 21 ER), the second-lowest mark by a reliever in the NL (min. 50 appearances).

It’s Jon Gray on the bump. Gray (10-8) took the loss against San Diego on Thursday, completing 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four. Gray gave up three runs in the first two innings — two of which were produced on a leadoff home run and an RBI single by Fernando Tatis Jr. — but settled down to retire nine of 10 batters in the third through fifth frames. He then put away two of the first three hitters he faced in the sixth before a Trevor Story error opened the floodgates for what would become a five-run inning. Gray now carries a 10-8 record along with a 4.06 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 143:56 K:BB over 142 innings this season.

Gray is 7-4 with a 3.65 ERA since May 22. On the season, he’s holding opponents to a .188 average with his slider and to .164 with his curve. Gray has made 10 career starts vs. the D-backs, going 3-4 with a 4.77 ERA (54.2 IP, 29 ER), 18 walks and 50 strikeouts. In five starts vs. Arizona at Coors Field, is 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA (26.2 IP, 18 ER), 10 walks and 18 strikeouts. At home this season, he has gone 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA (67.1 IP, 29 ER), 24 walks and 64 strikeouts over 12 starts.
