Dodgers vs Phillies MLB | Possible Playoff Preview

Why Bet on Los Angeles?

Monitor the status of Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner. He left Sunday’s game with a groin injury, didn’t play Tuesday and Manager Dave said to expect Turner to be down for a few days, but it sounds like he’s going to be able to avoid the injured list.  Turner sustained the injury when making a play to his right in the top of the second inning. Turner’s momentum on a chopper carried him into foul territory as he made a strong throw to first base for the out.

On the season, Turner’s average sits at .289, which is 13th in the National League and his .377 on-base percentage ranks 12th. In his last 86 games with an at-bat, Turner is hitting .315 (46-for-146). The Dodgers have a number of options over at the hot corner should Turner be out. Chris Taylor could come in from the outfield and give AJ Pollock more at-bats. That would also allow Trea Turner to remain over at second base with Corey Seager at short.

It’s lefty David Price (4-1) scheduled on the mound. Price allowed two runs on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Angels last Friday. Price faced the minimum through four innings before Jose Iglesias took him deep in the fifth to put the Angels on the board. He went out to pitch the sixth and recorded one out before Jack Mayfield sent a hanging changeup over the center field wall. That would be it for Price at just 62 pitches — 45 for strikes. The veteran regained his velocity on his four-seam fastball and utilized his changeup to record seven swings and misses on the pitch.

“I kept my pitch count down and I could have gone deeper into the game,” Price said. “I just gave up two big hits to those two guys and that was kind of the difference for us.”

The 5.1 innings Price completed were his second most of the campaign, and he needed only 62 pitches to reach that mark. He has posted a 3.53 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 29 appearances, including eight starts, this season. For whatever reason, it seems the Dodgers are timid about locking Price into a rotation role.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?

The Phillies have surged into the NL East lead despite remaining without outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who is on the injured list with left knee inflammation. However, he could be activated Wednesday. Manager Joe Girardi said McCutchen will not need a rehab assignment. Mid-August seems like a realistic target date for trade deadline acquisition Freddy Galvis. He is on the IL with a quad injury but is doing everything on the field except run. Running full speed is the final step before Galvis goes out on a rehab assignment.

This marks the first time in over 100 years (last: September 1916), the Phillies were at least 4.0 games out in August or later only to find themselves in 1st place within a span of 7 days. The last team to mount such a comeback in a week’s time was the Blue Jays in 2015 – on August 7, 2015 they were 4.5 games back of NYY and on August 13, they were in sole possession of 1st place on their way to the AL East title.

It’s trade acquisition Kyle Gibson (8-3) on the mound. Gibson pitched well in last Friday’s victory over the Mets, allowing just one run on four hits over six strong innings. The 33-year-old walked four and struck out three. The only damage done against him came on an RBI single by Dominic Smith in the third inning. Gibson has now been victorious in each of his first two starts with the Phillies. It was his 15th quality start (meaning six or more innings while allowing three or fewer earned runs) in 21 outings this season. He has a 2.80 ERA overall and 1.18 WHIP.

Gibson went from being a starting pitcher for the Texas Rangers, the last-place team in the American League West where the highlight was making the AL All-Star team, to helping the Phillies move into first place in the National League East for the first time in three months following a trade-deadline deal.

“What more can you ask for?” said right fielder Bryce Harper. “He’s gone out there and absolutely dominated. … It’s been great having him in our clubhouse.”

Gibson is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in two career starts vs. the Dodgers.
